  • recomedations for a carry gun for wife

weve been looking at getting her CHL and trying to find a good pistol for her. she wants something small she can attach to a pocket inside her purse.

she has shot my XD9 with no problems but it seems a little large for her purse. what would be a good .380 or 9mm that is small in frame? she liked the sig p238 she held at academy but im not sure if that would be a good carry gun since she would have to release the safety if she carried it locked and loaded.

In all honesty, I'd take her to a range that has a good selection of rentals and find what she likes to shoot best in a size that would work for what she'd be carrying it in. All we can do is give suggestions based on size and what we like to shoot.

Does she want a revolver or semi auto? Does she want something with a safety?

Semi auto for sure. She is very good with handling of my xd so just trigger safety would prob be fine.

Only problem we have is there are no ranges that have rentals where we live

                S&W 642.

While my wife is a great shooter and is proficient with semi-autos I thought it would be best to get a revolver. The last thing she needs to worry about in the heat of the moment is clearing a jam if anything were to happen.

You may want to look into the Kahr PM9, or the Sig P938 if she's ok with a single stack. The PM9 won't have an external safety and is DAO. The 938 will have an external safety and is SAO like a 1911. Both are Single stack and very small. If she's ok with more capacity and a double stack (wider, will take more room in purse) then I'd look at a G26 or G19, or XD of similar size.

I'm not a fan of the .380 for more reasons than just the lack of power. You can get a 9mm that's near the same size which ammo will be far more available and much cheaper and pack more of a punch.

KelTec PF9. Its the gun the Ruger LC9 was copied from. Its slightly lighter, does NOT have a manual safety to have to worry about when seconds matter, and its usually about $100-150 bucks cheaper. I chose the PF9 over the LC9 specifically because I didn't want a manual safety. Its a DAO with a nice stiff trigger (like a revolver)...this gun aint going off unless you mean for it to. Kicks like a mule with +p ammo but using standard pressure ammo its easy to shoot...and 9mm is cheaper and easier to find than other rounds.

Made them for over 30 years man. They stopped because it was cost prohibitive to keep selling them, and they started losing money on each gun sold. Hell, in the 80's they were more expensive than any of their long guns imported, sans the psg1.

I would tell you to consider one seriously for your wife. They are incredible firearms.
