10/22 has both of those prerequisites filled.

    **edit
To elaborate, I have several rifles, and my 10/22 is probably my favorite.

While I think the .22lr is an excellent round for certain uses...I like larger caliber weapons that can do lots of things. SKS is a pretty good bargain if you spend enough time searching. Lots of others out there....it just came to mind because I did a bit of research a while back to find something affordable that could serve many uses. SKS 7.62x39 is a pretty versatile weapon and can be found quite cheap if you look long enough.

10/22 is a great start, my son an I got one of those early in our collecting. We added a SGL31 soon after that goes to the range every time with us now.

That link you posted compares the 556 against an AR. With that, I agree with you. If I wanted a 5.56 caliber rifle, I would choose an AR.

But lets compare apples to apples. IE. the SIG 556R (7.62x39) against an AK. You state that it is heavy. It is the exact same weight as my Arsenal AK (7 lbs no mag). Actually it is slightly heavier because it has EOtech mounted on it. (something I can't do with my AK). You state the charging handle gets in the way. I never had that problem. Reciprocating charging handle, Aluminum alloy - so what. It is still better than any AK.

My point is that by the time you build/buy a quality AK, and then try to get get an optic to mount on it firmly, you could have bought a SIG and had a better rifle.
I ordered one for a buddy. He had it exactly 2 weeks..........sold it. He shoots a lot and bought it on a whim because of the name.(good experiences in the past) His opinion.......worst purchase he has ever made, on a gun.

Trust CJ, and DOHCTR. They have a lot of experience.
