  • Steel case ammo, worth it if planning to reload later?

Picking up one of the O-PAP rifles, but found one locally as well. He will only sell it with ammo included for $650 (rifle is unfired) which if you figure out shipping costs and FFL transfer comes out to about $72 for the 240 rounds of Tula. I plan on getting into reloading for the AK so is it even worth it to go for the steel cased ammo? I've actually never shot steel cased ammo through anything ever just because I enjoy reloading.

Might seem like a stupid question, but is it worth it at $0.30/rd for the steel case if I plan to invest in some brass ammo for it?

I wouldn't recommend it as the majority of the brass you find is berdan primed and you can't really reload steel cased ammo. I'm from the phone, you are talking about the ak caliber 7.62x39 right?

Yep 762x39. I found some Boxer primed brass case ammo for around $.50-55/round so I plan to go that route soon

I again would nt advise it. The projectiles might be hard to come by and finding sufficient brass to make reloading that caliber pointless. Just my opinion really. Plus how many times do you shoot that ak?

Well I haven't shot it since I down own it yet

Doesn't it just use a lighter .308 diameter projectile? Basically anything I'd use in a 300BLK?

            No, it's a .310" projectile

My advice. Pick a 5.45 and stock up on ammo while its cheap

7.62x39 is not worth reloading. The projectiles are a paint to find and when you do they're not cheap.

It is a pain in the ass to reload. The hardest part is not finding projectiles, it's finding brass. I have a few thousand cases I've accrued over time, however like mentioned above ^^^ in typical russian fashion they are using non standard .311" projectiles with a wacky ogive and weight. You can find them, but then the ammo is hardly worth the savings. The only time I would recommend it is if you wanted to target shoot and get some good accurate ammo, or if you ran across a bunch of projectiles. I believe the difference between the bores is russians run a deeper grove diameter than standard, instead of .004" then run .006". So because of this you can usually run a .308 diameter bullet in them and be fine, but you need to try different projectiles to get one that shoots accurately. Many people reload .308 in 7.62x39.
