  • My deceased dad vs three burglars.

Kinda long but I think you'll like this one.

My mom lives in the country in E Texas. Dad died three years ago this month. Mom wants to live on the farm as long as possible because that was the place she and my dad built and it was home.

Mom had open heart surgery last month and has been in in-patient rehab for a while and hasn't been home.

A couple of weeks ago several places got burglarized near mom's place, including my cousin who lives next door to my mom.

This week, a small-town PD in the county where mom lives stopped a car with three turds in it, searched the car and found stolen property that linked the occupants to my cousin's burglary.

PD arrested the hooks, seized the property, turned the hooks over to the county Sheriff's OfficePD arrested the hooks, seized the property, turned the hooks over to the county Sheriff's Office. The sheriff's detective loaded the jackass burglars in a car and drove them around where mom lives and the burglars pointed out what houses they've burglarized. They pointed to mom's house and said they were going to burglarize that one, were on the porch about to kick the door when they saw the sign.

Before my dad got sick, he had mom type up 3x5 index cards like you'd have in a recipe box:

"THE OCCUPANTS OF THIS HOUSE ARE TRAINED AND EXPERIENCED IN THE USE OF DEADLY FORCE AND WILL NOT HESITATE TO DEFEND THEMSELVES AND THEIR PROPERTY"

Dad put one on sign on every exterior door of the house.

The burglars said they saw the sign taped to the door (next to the beloved Eagle Globe and Anchor sticker) and figured if they kicked the door on this house, there was a good chance they'd get killed. The burglars got back in their truck and drove away.

True freakin' story. Not a forwarded email.

    Dad,
    You're still protecting her.
    Damn it, I miss you.

Dad was a career US Dept of Justice officer, Korean era Marine Staff sergeant, after retiring from the DOJ in the early 80's became a reserve sheriffs dept captain. He and my mother were some of the one first CHL instructors in Texas and taught free women's CHL classes in their little east Texas county - together they taught CHL to over 200 women (five or six at a time) and used his FFL to get pistols for them at cost. Mom and Dad were HUGE history buffs and were the driving force behind most of the historical markers in their county. The historical marker at the main gate to First Monday Trades Days in Canton is dedicated to my dad.

Mom was a registered nurse at Methodist Hospital in Dallas and ran the nursery for critical and premature babies. Mom left nursing to raise three kids.

I'm damned proud of them both.

Now that story about your parents right there. That is what being an American is all about.
