I had the opportunity to shoot a Dan Wesson Valor this weekend and it jammed cause I limp wristed the first shot. A little adjustment of my grip and I was putting rounds through the same hole at 7 yards. I could have been in big trouble had I been carrying and needed that first shot to count.

I have one that I haven't shot yet. The only thing I've heard bad is the recoil spring needs replacing around 1000 rounds. Do that out of the gate and it should be a good gun.

Mine will be my carry gun once I get my CHL renewed. I carried a 4" 1911 without issue or worry. They are more comfortable for me to shoot so I'm going with 8 rounds I'm good with over 15 I'm iffy with

you should check out a revolver some time

The Sig TacOps that we have is VERY smooth and runs like a Timex. The Rock Island TCM 1911 is loose but again runs like a champ. The Desert Eagle runs great, but is VERY dependent on good grip....like many 1911's are.

Try finding a Para Ordinance P18 chambered in .40. Lot's of rounds and they run pretty reliably. Not sure they fit in your price range though.

Biggest limitation with a 1911 as a carry weapon is lack of capacity.

but when you run out of ammo, you can beat the shit out of someone with it!

I have one and while I love shooting it, I wouldn't carry it unless I had no other choice. It is sensitive to the way you shoot it. I can shoot it with no problems but the guy I shoot with either jams it or the slide doesn't go all the way into battery.

I have only got a couple hundred rounds through it so I don't know if its not broken in yet or not but it does not seem to like the cheapo ammo like Tula. It will fire it fine but sometimes it wont cycle fully.

If I had to pick one pistol out of my safe to carry it would be my XD9. Unless I needed to bludgeon someone. The 1911 would be my first choice for that, and I love 1911's.

I do have a J-frame that I carry sometimes. I guess I didn't specify that I was talking about proving the reliability of semi-autos. Even revolvers can have issues if something is bent, out of time, weak springs, etc. They are definitely inherently more reliable than semis but I like slim guns for IWB carry.

I'm partial to Colt. The New Agent is brand new and my full size is a Series 80 model. Both are tight tolerance guns and shoot excellent.

Glock can't make one because 1911's don't blow up that often

My first recommendation is older colt, older kimber, or high end wilson, nighthawk ect

As for a $800 and less 1911 I'd recomend either look for a used Sig or pick up a rock island and buy it new mags, a recoil spring, and a buffer

I'd slicked up a few rock islands and they make nice pistols. Better in to spec than some of the springfields and even colts I've worked on

There are a lot that like the Taurus 1911 I'm not one but it's more a bias on Taurus than anything. The S&W is nice but hard to find anymore Ruger is nice too but also had to find Para has come a long way since moving to the states I've owned a couple and they are not bad

I'm not a big fan of the Philippine mad springfield's might as well save a bit and buy a rock island

I've got a Sig 1911 TacOps with 4 magazines and a custom field holster I'd part with... very slightly higher than your budget, but well within range.
