whats a good quality tent that isnt too expensive?

i want to start camping again in these cooler months. usually go by myself, but i'd prefer a 3-4 person tent for the extra space to sprawl out and put my gear in.

edit: i think i would like one that was tall and also something i could strap on my pack if i wanted to hike in somewhere

What's your price range? Tents can get expensive.

Exactly. What's your price range. If you are looking at a 3-4 person tent I'd say aim for a 5 person or bigger tent. How many seasons are you looking at camping. Summer camping you want something that vents good for the heat.

Honestly, a quality hammock is the way to roll. You can always rig a rain fly in bad weather, and you're up off the ground without needing a bunch of extra equipment. They take very little space to pack, cost less than a tent, and can hold up to 400lbs. You also won't get all stuffy like in a tent. Just get some paracord, and hoist your pack up off the ground while you sleep.

          Here's a good one:

spring, fall, and winter. i need something small and light enough to strap to my ruck, so that's why i'm looking at a 3 person

At that price, find what falls under your price from Cableas or Bass Pro, that's not a very big budget. Like Yale said, you're probably better off with a hammock. If you have any plans of camping over the next few years, spend the money now and get something nicer rather than replacing a tent ever year or two.

I'm personally a fan of the Marmot tents.

i'm not up to date on tent prices, i just figured a bill would get me something decent.

it would only get used like 60 days or less out of the year.

i had a coleman that lasted me many years until it got burned at a drunken birthday/camping party

Be sure to try out whatever you go with in the backyard for a few nights, so you can get used to it, and decide if it's what you like. Cabela's, REI, and Whole Earth provisions all have good return policies. Whole Earth is a bunch of dicks about CHL's, though.

I'd suggest looking at Walmart in that price range. Most cheap dome tents wont really let you stand up in them, at least the ones I've had. Depending on how much you camp, start with a cheap one and go from there. My first 2/3 person dome tent I bought from Walmart. Ran me under $40 but was miserable in the summer because it didn't flow any air and was realistically smaller than what it was advertised. Much happier with a slightly more expensive tent.

Probably not the best picture of it but it's the best tent I've bought so far. Got it from work on "perk" points. It's a two person tent and it sleeps that perfectly. Sets up in under two minutes if I have help. And is perfect in summer weather as you take the rain fly off and it's all mesh.

I'd watch REI and try to get an older Marmot, North Face, or Kelty on sale, as that will give you the best bang for the buck on a quality tent. Tents can get expensive REALLY quick, especially when you're wanting to save on weight.

Kammok is another option for a hammock.

Perfect for two, compact for travel, and made from 100% recycled, bluesign? approved fabric. The Roo Double hammock delivers unparalleled quality and performance from backyard to backcountry.

The Cabela's bargain cave is pretty swanky, too. The staff is allowed to try gear out if they right a review, and when they return it, it has to go to the bargain cave. I've seen them in there for 30 cents on the dollar.
