  • Question for all you guys will reload.

A friend of mine in Washington state. Called me today asking if There is a way to spot reloaded ammo from factory ammo. Because her husband is an army and he has a shit load of bullets 556. That he bought from someone else. And he's trying to sell them for some extra cash. And one of the potential buyers called her that if it is reloads that they can get up to 10 years in prison. I told her that's probably bullshit but to check her local laws anyway. So it's a two part question one how to tell the difference between reloads and factory ammo if you can. And have y'all ever heard of it being illegal to resell reloads in a private sale

You can do time for knowingly selling reloads without proper licenses.

Basically selling ammo without the proper license. Personal quantities aren't a problem though...at least I woulnt see the problem.

Only way for 5.56 is if the brass that is loaded has a different bullet than what it would have had from the factory.
Such as Radway Green or Lake City (there may be other head stamp/mfg as well) brass with a soft point or ballistic tip bullet. Both of those brass mfg are military ammunition mfgs and the bullets would be an FMJ of some kind.

If YOU DONT have a license for MAKING AMMUNITION, you can't sell your reloads. But you can sell ammo as a personal thing.

IN TEXAS: (Each state can vary)

Example, you can go buy Black Hills "Remanufactured Ammunition". Then later you can sell it to someone who's looking for ammo. YOU DIDN'T Make that ammo, so you don't need the license. If you sell it in a private transaction, nothing wrong.

Think of it this way. You can sell any gun you own in a private sale. You don't need a FFL to sell a gun FTF in a private transaction.

If husband is in the Army and selling 5.56 that is NOT reload................well sounds shady to start with. If it is the guys own reloads, the info above should suffice.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

Manufacturing ammo with the intent to sell requires an FFL. If someone buys ammo that is or isn't reloads and later decides to resll it, no harm no foul.

One of the quickest ways to check if it's reloaded is look at the headstamps. Often times they will be mixed. Look to see if it's trimmed as well and whether the primers are crimped in.

                    +1

Also, look for nicks, tiny dents and scratches in the casing. Even if they put it in the tumbler for polishing, it still wont be perfect. Often times you will get alot of brass where there is a tiny dent in the same spot on many casings, thats where the casing hit the guard cage in the shooting lane.
