Thompson AO 1911 45 ?

Ok guys.. I have been offered a thompson auto ordinance 1911 45 with flash suppressor and skeleton trigger for $400 by a friend and was wondering what the usual going rate and reliability is on these. Did a bit of research on google and found mixed reviews. What do you guys think about the gun?

Two factors;

1) When was it made? AO was pretty good for a long while, but the quality slipped really badly in the 80's and 90's. Kahr bought them out and quality has improved.

2) Someone has obviously messed with this gun. That could be good thing or really bad. I would take it to the range and shoot a couple of boxes thru it before I spent any money.
