  • Colt Light Machine Gun

This is a truly fascinating variant of the M16 platform that has been around for a while, but I got around to researching it and the open bolt firing mechanism is very cool:

    Carrier is notched:

And the hammer works in reverse (this looks super rigged to me):

And some good ole' Japanese gun porn (skip to about 50 seconds in):

Anyways I just thought this was cool!

Hmm, a DI machinegun. How many machineguns are DI?

Well technically this (or any AR variant for that matter) is not DI. In Stoner's patent application (http://www.google.com/patents/US2951424) he states "that the action is not direct impingement;'This invention is a true expanding gas system instead of the conventional impinging gas system.' Gas is routed from a port in the barrel directly to a chamber formed in the bolt carrier. The bolt acts as the piston and is sealed with small automobile-style piston rings. It is a gas piston system without an operating rod."

Yes I am being super pedantic today.

I don't know about the first original runs, but the later Canadian manufactured lmg uppers like I had were hammer forged.

They're pretty cool uppers, but not really at the same time. Mine was a flat top railed out version. I guess they're fun for beta mag dumps, but a shrike is more fun and beta mag dumps can be done on any upper. You also have to change you fcg to make them work appropriately which isn't great if you like swapping shit in and out.

I am more interested in the design variance. They took what they had and made it into an open bolt firing light machine gun by nothing but a few simple modifications to the bolt carrier and fire control group. Very neat design.

The Canadians still field them as LSV/LSW. The US chose the 249.
