  • Bought a new toy:

I started looking for a PTR at the gun show this weekend but ended up making an impulse buy on a DPMS Oracle in .308. I'm trying to figure out what to do about sights/optics for it. I'll be mostly using this for hog hunting and poking holes in paper.

If I scope it I would like to have something easily available that is not magnified for closer shots and to get on target quicker. Is a mini red-dot or reflex sight at a 45* angle my best bet? Are there any other good options?

Appreciate any input you guys have.

No. Hell no man. Don't put all that tacticool shit on your gun. People that will spend $200 on a cheap scope and $200 in backup sights infuriate me, because if $400 won't get you a useful scope that will get what you want done, it will get you damn close. You should pick the correct optic for your gun, for what it is you plan to do with it.

All you need is a good red dot. Like aimpoint. Or an 4x acog if you have the cash to blow.

          I agree with your thoughts.

I took this part out but I don't see the point of BUIS on a scoped rifle, at least for me. About the only "tacticool" thing I plan on putting on it may be a flashlight for hunting at night. Not to that point yet though.

That is what I'm trying to do though, pick the correct optic. My dilemma lies below.

I like the magnification of a scope, but also I struggle with quickly going from looking at the target to getting it in the crosshairs of the scope. Maybe that is a practice issue, but a red dot really makes it easier for me.

            ACOG properly used accomplishes that.

It's not much to look at:

Oh and an ACOG would be awesome but I was hoping to stay in the sub $500 range, or stick with the Monarch (3-12x42)

Primary Arms micro dot would be a good start IMHO

OP, you said, "at a 45* angle." That had me worried. Carry on.

A good quality 1-4 or 1-6 variable scope will do you some good. If you want more magnification you need to go up in quality or you sacrifice in things like light gathering, eye relief or distortion. You don't need any high magnification scope to hunt and sure won't be able to use anything very high at night.

I've got a "full size" PA red dot and magnifier I bought from him probably 5 years ago that is still going strong. I mounted it on there this weekend and if all else fails I will probably use it, I just wonder how it will old zero on a .308

Well that is what I meant. I know that is hard core tacticool but it seemed like a decent solution to my problem. Sounds like I would be better off picking one or the other and living with it though.

I like to be zoomed in and see exactly where I am hitting. At 100 yards I'm at 12x, at least at the range. I think that is probably where I differ from most people.

Maybe I will just get a mount for the Nikon, keep it at 3x and see how it works out.

No I like magnification at the range but there are times in low light or high heat where the higher magnification hurts. Also a good fixed 4 or 6 is hard to beat in dark or spotlighting.

Me too. Wanted to buy one last year but my timing sucks and the fear of a ban made them all disappear. I got this for $999, forgot the name of the seller.

Its just a simple inexpensive rifle and there a lot better ones out there, but I think it will work for me right now.
