Wholesale on that gun is around 270 bucks. Add shipping around 22.50 to the dealer. That puts the cost just under 300 to the dealer. Academy and large retailers can afford to make 20 bucks a gun because they buy so many. Try those guys for little less on guns(if they have them in stock that is).

Both of my wholesalers do not have that gun in stock. I agree, 450 is a bit too much. He is reaching because of the newness of the caliber. JMHO.

(I do have a BNIB Marlin .17HMR in stock if you want to go that way fairly cheap.)

Is Savage the only player right now? I figured Winchester will put something out along with Browning since they are owned by the same company.

Yeah and from what I've read, they struck a deal with Savage being a the number one seller for .17 HMR rifles.

I wonder if it is a deal for just a few years then they will offer their products. I also wouldn't mind seeing CZ build one either.

Sorry I should have clarified further, it was just an exclusive launch deal. I'm sure other companies will adopt the round as it's had nothing but great reviews and feedback. Savage can't crank those rifles out fast enough.

I'm not sold on the .17 WSM just yet. It's a rimfire, not reloadable... It's the most powerful rimfire cartridge you can buy, but it's still a rimfire. Think I would opt for a .204 Ruger and some reloading dies...
                    32 grain @ 4,300fps,40 grain @ 3,900fps,45 grain @ 3,650fps > 20grain @ 3,000...

If you're going to do that then you mine well jump up to a .22-250 or a .223 where you're going to have far more options for rifles and reloading components, we can play that game all day. The .17 WSM isn't trying to win any sort of best caliber competition, it simply solved the problems that a lot of people have with the .17HMR and that's how it's affected by wind. It's still not perfect but I would guess that over time you'll see some heavier grain .17 WSM projectiles hit the market.

Really, a hot .204 or .17 centerfire with a light bullet is going to be better than .223 or .22-250, but that's presuming the intention is shooting a fur-bearing varmint in season and preserving the pelt. .22-250 is still better than a .223, and getting closer to what the smaller bore bullets will do, but it isn't quite the same.

I'll take a 223 or 22-250 any day over the 204 it gets pushed around a.good bit by the wind.

True, it's going to come down to each shooters specific needs.

A good bit? Lets talk about that. How much does the wind push around a .22lr?

Depends on distance shooting and wind speed.
