  • Sharpeners for your hunting/skinning knives?

Sleeper's hunting knife thread got me thinking.

I've got a Lansky sharpener; the one with the set of files with the metal guide rods that you slide through holes in a 90 degree jig. It works, but not great, and its always been a little too fiddley for my likes.

Saturday while processing a hog, I thought to myself, there's gotta be a better sharpener (or at least one I like better). I like the looks of the Spyderco Sharpmaker.

What sharpeners do y'all use/like? Nothing electric.

I use the gatco same design as yours. Once I get them sharp I can maintain a edge with a strop.

I use a DMT Diamond Steel while working and a DMT bench stone to set a new edge. Any knife with a decent edge can be made razor sharp with a couple of swipes on the DMT Steel.

I have a hodge podge(?) kit that includes two round diamond rods, two ceramic rods and holder, and a flat diamond and a flat stone. I hate trying to get thing sharp, and cleaning up the edge of my misused daily Spyderco.

Sadly, I haven't used my hunting/skinning knife enough that it needs sharpening.

        Subscribed.

Just looking, two of mine are DMT, and I like those and use them fairly regularly.

I just got a Edge Pro Apex and it's the nicest sharpener I've ever had. Definitely worth the money.

I guess I'm behind the times as I still use a 3 stone setup like this.

Nothing wrong with stones dee. Most can't keep a consistent angle to make them work. It takes practice.

I use them but its rare.

I crack the door open on my car and drag the blade on the cement.

Hit a speed-bump and the angle goes to hell in a hurry though.

This when not in the field... Gets my knives super sharp, super quick. I sharpen all my pocket knives, hunting knives, machetes, hatchets, and axe with it.

Keep this in my hunting backpack in the rare instance one of my knives needs a quick edge...

Generally no re-sharpening is needed in the field. I always re-sharpen all knives used when I get home...

I love mine! It comes with Coarse, Med, and "Fine" belts. The Fine is a lot like a strop. Haven't had to use the Coarse belt much. Mainly the Med and Fine...

It's worth every penny! Northern Tool carries them as well as the replacement belts.

May sound dumb, but I have a hard time finding nice simple stones. To me knife sharpening is more of a hobby/relaxing thing than just knocking it out.

I say that, all my kitchen knives, I have a motorized thing for them. My camping/fishing and so forth knives, I like to just sit there, watch TV/BS/drink beer and take my time with them on a stone.

                            This. I just use wetstones.

I have the gatco set but I have this starrett tool stone I keep in my carry bag, while in the stand with nothing to do, I touchup my knives with it.
