  • .308 bolt action.

I want to delve into semi-long range shooting. Nothing to the degree some of you guys on here are active in. I am looking for an entry level .308 that can yield decent MOA accuracy for me. I chose .308 because of the performance it gives right out of the box, and I will not have to deal with hybrid loaded ammo both in price and availability.
I am looking for the best bang for the buck. Not looking to do 1000 yard shots right away. So 500 yard shots should be somewhat more realistic goal for a novice right?
Having said that, what is a decent .308 that will give me these results?

Looking at Remington 700 AAC-SD in .308. That seems like a cheap, decent place to start? Any other sub $1,000 guns out there? Is used or new a better way to go? Used might yield a better weapon for the price right? I know I run the risk of the gun being worn out and I would have no idea what small nuances to look for.

Ideas would be helpful, will tackle glass after I found a decent rifle.

    Thanks,
    Randy

I personally have always been partial to starting with a Savage accutrigger bolt gun and swapping barrels out to a Shilen or Lothar Walther.

As long as it has a decent stock you should be good. The models that come with the houge stocks will need to be changed as they are very flexible and can cause shots to be thrown.

I'm partial to the larger thumb flip on the savages as well. Not a huge deal but more comfortable to work the bolt

They are cheap actions, they have a great trigger, and you can install the barrel yourself.

My 700sps came with that overmolded piece of crap. HATE the stock. Love the rifle.

If I was going to do it again, I'd jump on a 700 P/PSS/SPS with anything other than the Hougue stock or one of the Savage "P" models.

I've always liked how the Ruger Scout looked. Reviews are decent on it, but it just looks sexy to me

I was looking at this one yesterday.

                Savage 10 FCP with 24” 1:11.25 twist 5 R rifling chambered in .308

He wanted 1,000 for it and it looked brand new. Very low round count, maybe 20. No glass.

I have access to a Ruger Scout with rails and 2 mags for 900. Not sold on it for longer ranges. Within a few hundred yards, fine. Looking to shoot further than that.

Not bad, just a warning some of the accutriggers have a problem when set really low.

I second the savage. I have 3 savages in various calibers .308, .270 and .243. They are all very accurate and I don't have any issues with them. The .270 was dead nuts accurate right out of the box.

Seen a few that when set on their lowest setting that lock up when adjusted back up to the 3lb mark they work fine. When savage was contacted they said it was normal.

3lb trigger pull is enough for me.

I prefer 2 and my 7mm is a bit lower than that but works fine for me.
