Oh, I don't plan on doing anything crazy. Just getting my feet wet, so to speak. Just some middle-of-the-road optics, and have some fun with it. It was just too good of a deal to pass up.

I did see that axis today. I agree it is a good starting point. However if I add just a few hundred more dollars the return will be worth it. I am hovering around the 1000 range for the gun.
I really liked the price and value from Redhawk in Colorado that is posted above. I keep going back to the 700 platform. It is a well tested gun and there are a ton of accessories and upgrades for it.

There was a group deal up by Chad Dixon that offered some top tier work at a very good price. You might look into. There was also a guy selling bedded FN SPR's at a fair price as well in the commercial sales section."It's another burrito, it's a cold Lone Star in my hand!"

Here is a link to the FN rifles they are 1200 so a bit over your budget but well worth it.

I am leaning towards a 700 AAC-SD with 20" stock barrel. McMillian stock. (I can get these cheap, i am an FFL) Great first time platform to shoot medium distance. I have a hook-up for a ziess scope. Once I get comfortable, then I will drop 3 to 5k on a better set-up. I do not want to drop a ton of coin only to find out I do not like long range shooting.
Thanks for all the tips,
Randy

The TC and XP shooters I used to shoot with generally would have considered 20 ounces too stout, but that was controlled competition, so I dunno.

Well finally, I made a decision. While I might not be a serious semi/pro shooters like a few here are, I tried to balance money/quality vs overspend on a gun that I might not like. Or for that matter like the style of shooting. There were 2 guns that made it to the final choice.
I chose the Remington REM 700 SPS TAC AAC-SD SYN 308. Being a dealer, my cost is 635.00. Out of the box best deal around. There is a lot of after-market accessories for the 700 platform. Also out of the box, there is a lot of good ammo in .308 that is better than my skills at this time.
Now for glass..............something that I know very little about. Any-one have a decent piece of glass that they MIGHT want to work some trade on?
drop me a PM or e-mail, fastcrj@yahoo.com.
Thanks for all the absolutely great input in this thread! There are some truly talented well informed shooters here!
