CARNESVILLE — State and federal agents investigating the shooting death of FPS Industries owner Keith Ratliff searched for explosives Wednesday on properties in Franklin and Hart counties.
Franklin County Sheriff Stevie Thomas would not say whose properties were searched or if anything was found. But he confirmed that the searches were in connection with the investigation into Ratliff’s death in January.
Hart County Sheriff Mike Cleveland said about 50 agents from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives converged on a farm owned by FPS Russia Host Kyle Myers and Ratliff.
“They were conducting an investigation regarding the explosives the pair were using on their YouTube show,” Cleveland said. “They were blowing up cars and other things in Hart County on their farm. Agents were looking for explosives or anything connected to explosives that would have put them in violation of federal law.”
Cleveland said Myers and Ratliff were using an explosive called Tannerite.
Tannerite is the brand name for an ammonium nitrate/aluminum powder-based explosive used mainly for target practice. The chemicals are shipped separately and need to be combined.
“It’s legal up to a certain amount,” Cleveland said.
Ratliff, 32, was found dead in his locked office Jan. 3 on his property off Hayes Road and Ga. 320 in Carnesville. An autopsy showed he died of a gunshot wound to the head. No suspects have been identified.
Ratliff worked with Myers to produce the YouTube show FPS Russia, in which Myers, who pretends to be Russian, demonstrates various kinds of weapons and explosives.
FPS Industries is a company that tested weapons and weapons parts.
