If I only wanted to spend that kind of money and wanted a quality rig I would buy a gun from Red Hawk Custom.

That is a great price on that FN SPR

Some of the earlier FN SPR rifles had some barrel issues but FN stood behind them and replaced the barrels when sent in. I think it was on some of the early A2 or A3 rifles.

The info in here on the FN SPR rifle is spot on . I don't think you could do much better below 1500$ ~ Those are about as accurate as you can get, for even much higher priced rifles.
Also the bushnell scope info is great someone posted. I would also throw out that sightron makes great scopes in that this range.
I'm trying to shop somewhere below this range. The 'cheap' market <1000$ rifles and <1000 scopes is breaking out into very accurate rifles too. They aren't nearly as nice but many will easily do sub moa. They're more in line with my goal too of a rifle for hunting also. even 1 moa is enough for hunting, so I'm debating whether ill really ever practice enough anywhere to warrant heavy rifle / sub-moa
Trust me you'll want to put them in the same hole and if you know your rifle is capable of it that helps you figure out where you're at with it.

I bought the scope for my Sako from them, excellent service and had the best price on the internet for the scope I was wanting.

I'm digging the 700 VTR... In looking at them, they obviously don't come standard for magazine - or do they? What all do you have to do to convert?

I've had the VTR before, it was my first bolt action gun I used to get into long range. If I could start all over again I would not have bought it, but there was nothing "wrong" with it. The muzzle brake is louder than it is effective, and the stock sucks. (like most of them do) You could add detachable bottom metal to the stock, but IMO that's a waste of time and money.

For less money you can get a thicker barreled, AAC-SD that comes w/ a threaded barrel, or you could get the SPS tactical that has no threads on the barrel. The stock sucks on both of these as well. The AAC having the "best" of the bad stocks IMO.

I know plenty of people shoot off bags, and get them to shoot okay, and some claim they are .25 MOA shooters all day. , but when you start putting bipod pressure on those cheap stocks you're contacting the barrel, and it will throw your groups off.

I went w/ the VTR for looks, and because at the time I thought that was a cool design. It's still neat looking, but nothing is really practical about the triangular barrel.

Thanks a lot for your input, it's valuable and I appreciate the recommendations... I'm looking to put something together in the next few months and would prefer not to start off with an inferior (and more costly) platform.

If it comes with a plain synthetic or Hogue overmold stock you can pretty much plan for an upgrade at some point. Some come with HS or B&C stocks which are ok some just don't like the feel of them.

I also need to buy a new axle back for my 5.0 wanna go to the casino.
That's why I don't want to blow it all on one thing.

I'm not going to change the stock for a long time. So a good stock right out of the box is a must.

my dpms lr-308 shot about an inch. Is that about 1/2" ?
so Im having a bit of a trouble convincing myself to go bolt action soon
especially because i have no where i can shoot even 500yrds currently.
so I don't really see what i have to gain.

those matches you shoot look awesome fun. fuck i have too many hobbies!
                          one must go!

That's a lil under .5 inches IRRC, I had a lil to much cheek pressure which is why the group "grew" tall. My last 300 yard group was .6 inches

Of course for me it's more than about just shooting groups. You could "SPR" that DPMS. Get a better barrel for it, nice trigger, ergonomic butt stock like the magpul SPR.

I just like bolt guns though.
