I inherited a Remington 742 and thought I might look up the year it was born, but not sure where to find that info. I went to Remington's web site but I couldnt find where to enter the numbers. I believe it a late 60's or early 70's model.

The first letter in the serial number is the month, and the second (and as the progressed, the second and third) is the year code. 742's were made between 1960, and 1980, so here's a table from another site for the second digit of the Remington serial numbers, and their associated years:
_______ G
_______ H
_______ J
_______ K
_______ L
_______ M
_______ N
_______ P
_______ R
_______ S
_______ T
_______ U
_______ W
_______ X
_______ Y
_______ Z
_______ I
_______ O
