  • Knife laws in cliffsnotes form?

Anybody have a link to the TX knife laws on what can/can't be carried and where? Cliffsnotes are fine.

Seems a student on the A&M campus stole a guitar and had a "large fixed blade knife" on him which turned into a Class A mister meanor. Just looking to familiarize myself with what could land you in trouble these days.

    Gracias.

I was like... Did he really sound it out.

        INAL,

Texas Penal Code 46.01 thru 46.06

        (6) "Illegal knife" means a: (A) knife with a blade over five and one-half inches; (B) hand instrument designed to cut or stab another by being thrown; (C) dagger, including but not limited to a dirk, stiletto, and poniard; (D) bowie knife; (E) sword; or (F) spear. (7) "Knife" means any bladed hand instrument that is capable of inflicting serious bodily injury or death by cutting or stabbing a person with the instrument. (a) A person commits an offense if he intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly carries on or about his person a handgun, illegal knife. Switchblade illegal.

          (b) Except as provided by Subsection (c), an offense under this section is a Class A misdemeanor.

Shit like that will get you. Breaking two laws that is.

Stay away from big fixed blades and double edged knives and you'll be fine

I carry a small kabar TDI and/or my spyderco delica wave most often

so what about a bayonet affixed to a rifle?

What about a 6" Dagger or Survival knife? As long as it's in your camping bag or on your private property you are ok?

Say a burglar comes into my home and I use a survival knife to stop his attack?

My daily carry is a cheap Gerber but just making sure I don't have issues if I take a big knife with me on a hunt while it's in my bag in my truck or on my person for protection while walking around.

Thanks for the copy/paste but still looking for situational clarification, not just the penal code.

                Thanks.

                  5.5"

Here's what I'm carrying today. 9.25" overall open, 5.375" closed, but only 3.875" on the blade so it's totally legal (except in San Antonio where I'm pretty sure there's a law against any locking blade).

WTF? I always thought a locking blade was a safety feature.

It's about CARRYING it on your person outside of your property.

It looks like he's in trouble for carrying it, and it's worse because he was committing another crime while committing that one.

If you want a weapon in your car for protection a Firearm is allowed w/o a CHL. Stay away form other things like, bats, large knives etc etc.

If it's in your bag for hunting you should not have a problem, or if you're out hunting you should not have a problem if you're not stealing guitars from campsites.
