  • remington core lokt ammunition possible problems

Deer hunting 2 weekends in a row. First shot, big buck, over 140 lbs, 8 point nice rack standing stationary looking at me, with slight angle away from me on the head end. Took a shot with a 700 bolt action 30/06 180 grain from 75 yards, aim point was just behind the shoulder. Resounding thump, deer went down. He pumped his back legs, got to his feet and ran off. Found a piece of bone off the shoulder blade about 20 feet from the hit on a slight blood trail. Followed the blood for 300 feet till it stopped. Looked for 2 days, nothing.

Second shot , 9 point walking. 125 lb deer. aimed for the area behind the shoulder. Didn't compensate for the walk, 120 yards. hit about 3" back, this deer was also walking away slightly angled. Bulled missed the stomach hit the heart and liver, it stopped inside the right shoulder. Every shot I've made before this box of 180 grain 30/06 remington core lokt ammo has exited the animal like it should. I don't see anything on the inet about any changes to this ammo.
Don't worry about what you can't change.

Core Lokt bullets are far from consistent or accurate for that matter but I'm suprised you didn't get an exit using 180's that seems pretty odd.

I also thought it was wrong that the first ran off and the other didn't exit.

If you hit shoulder that close the bullet could have over expanded and not penetrated into the vital cavity. I have never really heard of this problem with the core lokts though usually HP's and ballistic tips are more common to do that.
