(5) “Handgun” has the meaning assigned by Section 46.01, Penal Code.
Sec. 46.01. DEFINITIONS. In this chapter:
(5) "Handgun" means any firearm that is designed, made, or adapted to be fired with one hand.
According to definitions, it appears that machine pistol would qualify.
That is until you look at the catagories on the license:
SA - SemiAutomatic
NSA - Non-semi automatic
But if you want to get technical, a full auto is a "non-semi automatic".
We would have to delve into the legalese to get a definitive answer, if one exists. This very subject might be working it's way through the courts as we speak.

David, I would go with CJ's advice and not carry anything but a pistol.
The State of Texas has made it illegal to possess certain weapons, even though you can have a federal stamp authorizing you to possess it.
It's a "defense to prosecution", which means you can be arrested for it, get the weapon confiscated, and then raise the defense at your trial.
Not something I would want to bee booked for, have my weapon seized, and then spend thousands for an attorney.

Walking to work this morning I couldn't help but think about this thread for some reason. Being on a military base in Afghanistan there is a 50/50 ratio of people open carrying anything from 20" M16A2, M9, Sig P226, M4, M249, etc, etc vs people not carrying. Not saying that the dining facility here would be a comparable any fast food joints in the US BUT it is just comon practice to see and given the base population there are virtually zero reported incidents. In fact people that are unarmed are generally more polite here.Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

Same arguments that have been presented from both sides of the fence on opencarry.org for years.
I have open carried in Colorado but doubt I would regularly here, although it would be nice to have the option. And to the point of "why would you need to" my simple response would be "because I can".

Would never open carry, even if there's no proof one is better than the other. There are always possibilities, and if you show you have a gun then most likely you are going to be the first one who is going to get the most attention by the bad guy, or worse, guys who may get the jump on you, and whether or not it is safe to draw and fire. A cop friend of mine has been instructed when he's off duty that there are situations where it's better to react only if a situation escalates rather than take initiative, depending of course on the situation and the cop's digression. The logic is it's better to be a living witness...
