I think you might be able to squeak by for about 750-800 dollars before tax.

Right now, you may be lucky to build one for $800-900 IF you can find parts. I put mine together last year and it cost about $500. Basic rifle, iron sights, NON chrome lined barrel

Yep, Walmart and Academy had been getting some ARs in stock and they didn't raise prices. In fact, you could get still a real Colt for $1100. That was a couple weeks ago though and I'd bet they are out of stock at their warehouses now.

Right now it will probably take you months to get all the parts to build one unless you want to blow your budget up paying stupid prices on Gunbroker. Receivers, parts kits, BCGs, and mags are all very hard to come by at this point.
