  • Brass vs. Steel Cased Ammo – An Epic Torture Test

This is a pretty good read, long but good.

Came across this yesterday and thought some here might find it interesting. I personally don't shoot steel in anything but my AK. http://www.luckygunner.com/labs/brass-vs-steel-cased-ammo/?utm_source=Newsletter&utm_campaign=55fe0250f8-1%2F20%2F13-+NewsletterList&utm_medium=email#reliable

    was good yesterday as well

Cause nobody posted in it. I read it last night and was impressed at their discoveries. I may need to keep an eye on a barrel or two using the Brass cased Privi ammo I like so much. My S&W piston gun has probably 5k through it already.

I was surprised at how quickly some of those barrels were being "shot out" with only 5k-6k rounds through them. I guessed that one would get at least 10k rounds out of the life of the barrel. I'm also pretty impressed with the results from Federal, I have several hundred rounds of that sitting in a box at home.

The results made me pretty happy about the 2500 rounds of federal in my safe as well. When I was 18 I had some wolf steel jam in my Mini14 to the point it took a rubber mallet hitting the bolt to get it to release, so I learned my lesson on steel early in life.

Seeing how widely the performance in steel case brands varied, I'd like to see a test between different brass case brands

same here. i have shot a bunch of the Privi serbian stuff and never had any issues that i can think of but would like to see how long before it eats the barrel up.

That's how my AR handles it as well

All I shoot is steel unless I come across a great deal on brass. Never had any issues that weren't caused by worn parts anyway.

Most barrels should last 20k rounds at least.

Was it the high rate of fire and barrel temps that expedited the wear process then?

Yes (I haven't seen the video) but heat adds an exponential curve to wear rate. Also, the higher the twist rate the shorter the barrel life.

Ok cool, i was thinking it would have been a much better representation to shoot at a much lower rate. I know when I design anything for high temperature I have to look at a few tables comparing temperature vs ultimate tensile strength and so on....but Im not sure what material the barrels are or how much thermal expansion helps interference.

Does the twist rate just drive actual contact between barrel and bullet or is there more to it than that?

Higher rate of twist, faster the bullet spins to stabilize, more friction, moar heat I would suspect.
