  • What do yall think about an SKS?

seeing as ar15's are priced ridiculously, I am thinking about getting an sks instead and doing a tactical build.

have a buddy that has one for $450 and one for $500.

    opinions?

Lol at $500 for an SKS. That is a $10 gun.

I will never own one. Especially at that price.

ok.....what would be a more reasonable price?

I've had a Norinco one since back when they sold for $90. It shoots 2" groups at 100yds with the shittiest ammo you can find, and goes bang every single time.
And like all Russian designs, you can run a few hundred rounds through it, throw it in the closet for months without cleaning it, and repeat.

In the current market, you probably won't find them for much less than $450 without a lot of searching.

SKS and Mosin Nagants are rifles that I don't own but wouldn't mind having a dozen of each to stash away for rainy days. Cheap or at least they were a year ago and even cheaper 10 years ago.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

Most people associate them with "cheap" rifles because years ago they were bought and sold for a $100 bill quite often. They have also been associated with a "slamfire" problems due to infrequent cleaning. Also some models have been lesser quality than others.

That said, I have always enjoyed them. The price was the reason it was my first semi auto rifle back in the nineties. They are dead simple to work on and there are many improvements that can be made to suit your needs.

My latest rebuild is a 1958 chinese type 56 military issue, pre norinco, post sino-soviet. With me freestanding, it was hitting 12" groups at 200 yards with iron sights last weekend.

well that settles it! The wife is wanting to get me a semi auto bug out rifle and this rifle popped into my head. i like the idea that i can also share ammo with my mosin nagant.
The mosin is a stupid cheap rifle, also, but it is a superb sniper rifle in my opinion and I have ZERO complaints about what it can do.

So, an sks with a olive drab stock with a nice little cammie tiger stripe paint job added to it and some magazines sounds like a fun little rifle to me.

The sks fires the 7.62x39 (AK) cartridge, not the 54r.

Damnit.....i was doing research and saw that it would fire the other but the more responses i am reading about, the more it says that the 39 is right and the 54 wont work.
