  • Am i crazy for wanting to start a deer farm?

I've got the land, Ive got the time, I've got the feed.

All i need is the fence and the deer.

This would be for raising for highfence hunting operations. I would not have a hunting preserve. Eventually it could be a possability, but at 3-5 a foot for fencing and needing all new fence to cover a milexmile section. Id need much more money than i could ever afford to make in my lifetime.

You really need to check the laws for your state. Does Kansas allow hunting in high-fence preserves? A really cheap alternative is Red Deer, and some semi-exotics. You should talk to PewterY2K about this, BTW. His family has an game ranch in South Texas. If you want, I've got a very good friend that has managed game ranches. I'm sure y'all could work something out.

Yale im actually lucky and have a active whitetail deer farm 17 miles from my door.

Its a young operation at 5 years, but its someone with actual deer and knows what need to be done to start, and cost.

We can have hunting preserves here, but you gotta have the money to fence it. I could maybe afford to fence 20 acres. Maybe haha.

I really want to do whitetails. They are my passion.

I would work on a breeding operation with that small a plot. A couple of acres of breeding pens, and just focus on production for sale, then fence in the rest of the farm with the profits. The breeding pens will need tons of tree cover, so the deer don't ever see or hear anything new, and run themselves to death. Deer are fucking retarded.

Yeah, ive got that mapped out already. As far as pens, and tree cover for bucks.

The breeding program is what im going for.

You ought to look at semi-exotics for a little while, too, like Corsican Ram, and Barbados Ram. They're cheap, and people want to shoot them for some reason.

Ill look into a few. There is a fallow deer a guy has as a pet.

I know we can transport whitetail in from other states, Not sure about other species.

You might look into state and federal programs. About 12-15 years ago, many Texans were doing something to get state or federal funding for the high fence areas. No one that was involved wanted to talk about it, as they seemed afraid the "loophole" or whatever would be closed. It sure seemed interesting to those of us that did not own land.

There certainly is still money in Whitetail breeding operations. Especially when folks are paying 10-12k to shoot 190"+ deer like it's no tomorrow on most Texas ranches. A trend that has changed in the last couple years is that people seem to be more into the monster typical WT as opposed to the gnarly Non-typicals that were really popular for a while. That trend tends to shift every 5 years or so. Also keep in mind that you are not only selling bucks, but selling does are often overlooked and of course you can sell the straws of semen.

My uncles place has 6 breeder pens, between 15-25 acres each. He has one 180" plus buck per 20 does in the pens, and 3 of those 6 beeders are 200"+. As Yale mentioned, they are heavily covered and people arent allowed near the pens.

This is a 196" WT in one of the pens, this deer is only 3.5 yo.

We got a quote recently to high fence our place in East Texas and it came back at $5.50 a foot, that was with new pipe and a couple of very tricky water gaps. The biggest expense will be feed, as you know native vegatation wont last long in a 20 acre pen with more than a handful of deer in it let alone 20+, you'll be trucking in the protein weekly

From what ive seen from the monster farms breeding genetics. There 2 year old deer are over 200 inches easy. I want to breed tall semi wide typicals.
Just like that 196 i was hunting this year. This is the look i want.

The more i look into it pewter it will be better for me to breed nothing but 160-200 inch shooter deer. It will basically be a hobby that i can call a business, and hope it grows.

I am going to visit a farm today. Then really sit down and put a plan together.

As far as fencing goes, About 4-5 a foot is what ive found and thats doing your own labor. As far as animals ill be happy to have 3-6 I dont see anyone who can just go out and buy 20-30 head of deer. Most start with 2-3 and hopefully double that with twins/triplets.
