  • First firearm purchase help

So I was introduced to shooting in 2012 for the first time thanks to A buddy. I went with him to the range and shot a Springfield XDM 9 mm as well as rented anything I could get my hands on this year.

I had decided I was going to purchase a Springfield XD 45 in January but then this weekend happened.

Went out to my dad's land and my cousin and Uncle brought out there Shotgun's and clay pigeons. My god...shooting clay was even more fun than shooting paper targets. So now I'm torn, do I pick up a pistol first (will be at home in the dresser 99% of the time) or pick up a shotgun and maybe pick up hunting. My uncle/cousin go hunting alot and offered to take me, and I can go shoot targets at my dad's for free anytime I want.

What would be your first purchase?

Using your scenario and in my experience, shotguns are very versatile guns and fun to shoot. Only down side is, they make horrible CCW. So if you're going to want to carry - pistol first - if not shotgun all day long.

I can't carry at work and really don't see myself carrying in public to be honest nor do I have a CHL at this time.

Any suggestions? Be mainly used for clay/fun/home defense and maybe some waterfowl.

870 is probably your best bet if you are on a budget.

                For fun...shotgun all the way.

Mossy 500, 870, 887, nova...all can be had for cheap if you want a pump.

Entry level (cheap) auto loaders will be stoeger M2000/M3500, Remington 11-87, mossberg 930, and I'm sure there are more out there.

I've actually been looking for a really cheap M2000 because they're fun and use the same type of inertial system as benellis...just not the same fit or finish.

My cousin (who hunts/shoots alot) is talking to me about going above entry level and going ahead and getting a nicer piece so I don't have the "well I should have went one step above for fit/finish" regret.

I don't mind paying a bit more and getting a quality piece.

                        Get your CHL.
Carry pistol to car every morning.
Secure pistol in car at work.
                        Acquire pistol when leaving work.
                        Carry everywhere you legally can.
