They do a homeland security check when you buy a car now. If I were guessing he has ended up on some sort of DHS list. Have him try and catch a flight and see what happens.....

Nah, you're talking about the OFAC list, I deal with this every day. There are MANY, MANY people that get OFAC alerts on their bureau. If you have the same name as someone else and a similar location of birth you're on the OFAC list, but the DOB never matches. I probably see about 2,000 OFAC hits a year and I've probably looked at 20k in total and I've never seen a real legitimate hit. It wouldn't prevent you from getting a loan.
