First off, I'm not a "gun guy" but I know enough to know there are some mods I may want to consider. What are some things I should be looking at? Shooting range and nightstand duty are the primary uses.

Take it apart clean it and lubricate it well.
Don't put cheap ass ammo through it.
Practice, practice, practice...

honestly, even if you don't reload, I think you might get a lot of milage out of a cheap chronograph as your first major accessory.
and can't you swap calibers on the XD pretty easily? aren't they all the same frame? If so consider a swapout set for a different caliber just for the hell of it. 40 will need mag, barrel and slide, but from there you can do 357sig with another barrel. I don't know if they are that versatile for cheap but that has always been a fascination for me.

I don't know exactly what's available for them, but go out and shoot it first and see if there is anything you dislike about it right off the bat. Things to consider would be trigger parts, sights, slide release, mag release, etc.Atlantic Blue '00 - '03 Cobra motor and TKO600, solid axle, full MM suspension
Silver '01 Vette - D1 blown LS
