Buying an assault rifle

With all the talk of bans, I'm wanting to get something. My dad has an UZI and an AK, SKS, but he has never owned at AR variant, so I was wanting to look into one of those.


I see so many names and variations, what is a good one to get?

An assault rifle is a selective fire rifle that fires an intermediate cartridge. Your best source for assault rifles is going to be the classifieds on subguns.com and sturmgewehr.com.

I meant the Armalite (AR) looking guns.

I would look there, but I honestly don't know all the add ons and what's good and bad, etc...

What price range are you looking to stay in? This will impact greatly the answers to your question. On purchasing a semi auto rifle.

I won't be pedantic or get into semantics about the name.
For the average AR owner/shooter, most manufacturer's AR variants will be more or less equal.
If you want one on the compact side, an M4 (aka "carbine" variant (16" barrel, collapsible buttstock, flat top upper receiver) is the way to go. Most come with a front sight and you can add a rear sight and/or optical sight of your choice.
If you want something a little bigger, an A2 variant is the way to go. Those will have a 20" barrel, a fixed buttstock, and an upper receiver with a carry handle/rear sight.
With the current climate/market, expect to pay a minimum of $1500 for either variant, unless you have a hook-up.
