  • The CHL process has turned into a pain in the ass!

My wife and I originally started the process a couple of years ago, at which time we went down to the SO, went to booking, and got our prints, no charge. I contacted Austin for arrest record, which was $15 bucks.

Fast forward two years and you are forced to contract with Morpho Trust, schedule an appointment, and drive in to request your record. That fee is $24.95. They tell you $15 goes to the state, $9.95 to them. Why can't I just make the same exact request they do to the state? It's cheaper and it saves my time. Oh wait, someone had a lobbyist, didn't they?

Then, after that pain in the ass process, you have to schedule another appointment with them to get fingerprinted, they say twice in the process. Twice. That fee is $49.95.

    What the hell?

The girl I spoke with said it was done in Senate Bill 9, which looks to have gone through in 07 and dealt with, on the face, schools.

My Brother and Mom are getting their fingerprints done at a place in Lewisville in preperation for when they take the CHL course. This place was on the TX DPS website as an authorized place to get them done and it's only going to cost like $10.

Can I get that info? The CHL department, specifically records, are the ones that steered me to this place. I'll drive the additional to save that cash.

Additionally, the SO are the ones that told me they no longer do the printing, said that it is now required to be in a system called FAST.

That sucks. My girlfriends application hasn't sucked yet. The only difficult part was the printing.

My renewal was a breeze. Didn't have to submit anything but my form from class and a barcode.

Wishing now I had followed through back then. Now to see how long the process takes.

It's the same Morpho Trust place, but when they filled out the online appointment info, the site said it would cost $10...

Aahhh, when they get there the fee is $10. But it requires an additional $15 for the state to get the required records search. Fingerprinting looks to be an excuse to charge ten bucks to request your records from the state, which we are no longer allowed to do, evidently.

Right, $10 to them and $15 to the state... Probably.

Not sure if the $15 was covered in the $140 they already paid for the CHL license fee?

Nope. These are additional fees. What once was $15 is now $75.
