  • Gunsmith gripe.

I have an old sporterized Mauser that I wanted to use as a deer rifle. I took it to a local gunsmith to look into modifying it for a scope. Well, I got quoted $75 for bending the bolt handle if I would do the polishing after. I also provided the low safety for the smith to install. I got a call last week and was told it was ready and the gunsmith wanted to talk with me about it. So I went in this saturday to pick it up and the gunsmith then shows me the low safety is not on and how the bolt is not fully assembled and begins to tell me where it needed milling in several areas after reshaping the handle and and where the reciever needed to be cut for it to function.

I then asked how much for them to finish the job, and was told it would be another $100.

So $175 minimum for bending a bolt handle. I'm feeling a little taken, am I wrong?

More than I'd spend, there's plenty of online places to get these and also eBay.

Who did you take it to?

Did the smith explain that it might require more modifying and let you know the rate can change due to this?

Yeah, I had seen a few of the online options, but I wanted to deal with someone in person. I took it to Rays in Dallas. A good friend of mine used to use them before he died and I remembered him liking the place.
Our original deal was bending the bolt handle to clear the scope I provided. I was told I could save some money by polishing it myself after the work was done. When i went to pick it up was when they began telling me that i was going to have to do a lot of metal work while handing me an unassembled non functioning rifle. So, no talk about rates or more milling and metal work until i asked what the cost would be to actually finish the job. I was not expecting anything other than the handle to be modified.

You know, I met you years ago and have always held that you were a really decent guy from that experience and I still believe that. However, comments like that come off as extremely rude.

Custom work can always go a tad squirrelly. When you're paying someone to do one-off stuff, I say always expect the worst LOL. If he didn't realize how much more was needed it's just Murphy's Law. I'd be MUCH more upset if he did the extra work for me and then said "pay me $175"... he is giving you the option.

I didn't dispute that. So, you two are saying my question is ridiculous or an unnecessary one?

No, their answer was a more PC version of my answer. It's not an AR15 lower and upper being pinned together, it's custom work. Sometimes Murphy's Law rears its head.

If you had ever dealt with Ray Brantley personally, you'd have never walked in there again. No shit. At least he gave you the option before just doing the work and charging you. In the old days, I can assure you that would not have happened, and if you didn't like it, he'd have told you to stick it up your ass. I'm assuming his boys run it now, but I haven't spent a dime in there in 25 years, and never will.

Yeah, that's where I am now. They are finishing the work. I suppose I was caught off guard by them expecting to just hand it over and telling me to finish it. I had informed them it was a budget gun and was not expecting major surgery.

I get that and honestly, had the call been " we had a problem, now this needs to be done", I don't think I would be bothered. But it was all done as they had planned it this way and this result was to be expected. I guess that's what really caught me off guard. That and bending a bolt handle isn't really up there with "serious custom work".

It had been years since I had been there, but I was planning to return for a pistol and a "stack on" box. I'm thinking twice about that, now.
