  • Shotgun & 1911 Advice.....

What do you fellas consider the best home defense shotgun under $500.00? Also looking for the best 1911 for under $1000.00. I do plan on carrying the 1911 from time to time in a OWB holster. And advice on both firearms would be great!

    Thanks!!!

I have really enjoyed my Sig 1911, and it was well under $1K. The Sigs are a little non-traditional, but they also come standard with several features that are usually only seen on higher-end 1911s. There are a million opinions though, so do plenty of research.

Even though I own a Winchester Defender, I'd probably recommend a Remington 870. It's been around forever, has a ton of accessories for it, and as far as I know is unbreakable.

As far as 1911's, not sure of your skill level but it's not a gun I'd recommend for concealed carry to a novice. That being said, a 1911 is a big hunk of heavy metal with the 5" barrel. I'm comfortable with carrying one but you need a really good belt and holster to carry one comfortably. You might look at the smaller, compact models which I happen to carry; a Kimber Ulta Carry. I know a few people on here give Kimber shit but I've never had a problem with the 3 I own.

I normally conceal carry either my Sig P238 or Kahr CM9 in a custom leather OWB holster with a heavy duty leather gun bealt. I've always wanted a 1911 though.

I'm sure you'll be fine than, carrying a 1911 should be similar to the 238 only heavier.

No complaints from our Remington 870 Compact 20g. Fantastic pump shotgun. It's even worked well for dove hunting. I really like the ergonomics of the compact and the wife handles and shoots it very well. I don't think you can go wrong with an 870.

I think most of the 1911's out there are pretty solid guns. I'd handle a few and pick what fits you best. A Colt 1911 is on my personal short list. I wouldn't want to carry one though. I carry a Sig P239 9mm and the wife carries a Sig P238.

Why the 20 gauge? For the wife? I think a pump from any of the big 3 (Winchester, Mossberg, and Remington) would be fine but if you are wanting to accessorize it the Remington is the way to go, even the Mossberg is better. The Winchester unfortunately gets the short end of the stick as far as tacticool accessories.

I agree, the 1911's are solid guns. I know Kimber gets a bad rep but I've never had any problems with mine. Whatever gun you choose, I'd recommend a minimum of 500 rounds to check for reliability. I probably shot over 1000 rounds before I started carrying mine but I carried a Glock for a long time and the Kimber was more of a safe queen.

I've been looking at the Remington 870 but there are so many different ones. Should I just get one of there cheap ones & accessorize it?

                          I'm really considering a Sig 1911.

                            I've got a Sig 1911 C3(4.25" barrel) and I like it.

Dude, for an out of the box tactical shotgun, that Nova for $341 can't be beat. Go finger blast a bunch of shotguns before you make a decision.
