I'm seriously thinking about building one of these.

What would I need to mill out a space on the buffer tube? I would imagine a drill press would be best but I don't have one. About all I have is a drill and a dremel tool. Could it be done with one of those and the appropriate bit?

I'm thinking I can get away with using a generic pistol grip. Can anybody think of any reason why the higher backstrap of the MOE is important to the design?

people are using dremels to trim the buffer tube between two existing holes

The MOE grip allows you to hide the attachment bolts to the metal strap.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

^ Yep, what kb said. Also, the OP on ARF referred to the grip as an MOE, but I believe you would need the MIAD grip, which allows the shooter to configure. Once the metal strap is attached to the main body of the grip, you would then slide on the modified back strap to cover up the mounting hardware.

Well that seems like it will take forever but I will give it a shot. That will probably be the last part that I do anyway.

You are right. The pistol grip was a MIAD, I think the buttstock was a MOE.

That feature is probably worth it. I was trying to do it with the parts I have sitting around the house (and I probably still will for practice) but I think the finished product will look better with the MIAD.

you do not need to remove the metal from buffer tube if you just figure another way to hold the relase down. I am working on that so that it can still be a single shot rife.

Anyone know the distance the slidefire and like stocks are designed to reciprocate?

I guess that would make sense since they use normal buffer tubes. I measured one of my commercial and mil spec tubes. The commercial was about .800" and the mil spec about .650".

All it needs to recoil is enough to reset the trigger.

I really need to get out in the garage and try to build one. I just need a MOE stock instead of the CTR ones I have. Maybe a quick trip to cheaper than dirt tomorrow can fix that problem.

I'm going to try it with the MIAD and a cheapo M4 commercial stock. It has enough slop to slide very easily. I have a nut figured out to change it from semi to rock n roll. Similar to the slidefire, where turning the knob retracts the pin in the stock. Kind of like an upside down wing nut.

I picked up a MOE stock and some hardware to try this tomorrow. I could only find 1/8" galvanized. It feels rigid enough but I am worried about how firm the pistol grip is when not attached to the reciever.

That's my biggest hurdle. I want the grip attached and able to slide. I dont want the it flopping around. I'm just not sure the best way to go about it yet.
