Synthetic Motor Oil as a Gun Lubricant
An AR-15 type rifle will fire and function dirty as long as it is liberally lubricated. The problem is the more oil you pore down the bolt and into the chamber the more dirt it collects. What we discovered is that using Mobil1 synthetic motor oil usually in a 0w30 or 5w30 works much better than the CLP.

Interesting anecdotal evidence. I've long heard of people using motor oil on guns, but never synthetic, and specifically low weights like they recommend.

Just another mans opinion on what/how to lube your gun. Everyone does it differently, but they all seem to work fine

Guys in the IPSC have been doing that for years. I use wheel bearing grease on frame rails and bolt lugs works just as good as any gun specific grease out there, plus you get a lot more for your dollar.

I've started using some leftover 0w40 Mobil1 that I have, and so far I'm pleased with the results. My 1911 cycles more smoothly, and my AR-15 seems to manually cycle better (I haven't shot it yet).

Only thing I hate is when I pour a whole quart on the gun.

I've used mobil1 on guns for years. A quart will last for quite sometime.

Eh lube it with something. We were on the range running some drills. I left all my cleaning gear at the top of the hill in my buddies truck. I wasn't walking back it was about 500 yards and wasn't worth the walk.

The rifle started running kind of sluggish. I popped the bolt and pulled the cam pin. Took a tube of chapstick out of my pocket and rubbed the moving parts down with it. Popped it back in and ran a few hundred more rounds before calling it quits. Worked great.

Hell there was an article in SWAT magazine I think a few years ago where someone used Vagisil.

I usually use whatever oil I have laying around now days and use non-chlorinated brake cleaner to hose the AR out after 500 to 1000 rounds punch the bore a few times then re-lube with what ever oil I have.

I really like doing a base layer of clp and let it set for a couple days, because it dries out. Then i hit it with another lube that stays on better.

Like was stated, as long as its lubed your good. Im sure someone out there thinks crisco is the only thing to use.

Many a time I've pulled a dipstick on a truck to lube an AR15.
