It just looks unbalanced when the magazine is behind the grip rather than between the grip and forward handguard.

Meh, I'd be no more intimidated by them then any other joe, just a bunch of foreigners clumped together fighting for the French. Now the French army special forces brigade or Naval commandos, wouldn't mess with them.

Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

Honestly, I try to remember the stories about the French resistance in WWII.

However, about what you said above about the French is what I saw in Iraq for just about every damned country. Only ever really saw US military off base.

I was still laughing when I typed that. I don't really have an opinion on the Famas.

Other than the country with the least modern battle experience finds it to be trash and are replacing it with an AR15.

                      With an AR18 operating mechanism

I have never seen one (at least that I know of), what about the HK 416 is AR18? Looks like a standard AR15 to me, but that is purely judging on the picture you posted.

Edit: I see that the rear sight might be different?

I'm sure it's in regards to the short stroke piston. The AR15 was the space aged refined polymer/alloy spare no expense rifle. The AR18 was the cheap third world stamped steel piston variant. Think Mini-30.

It utilizes a type of short stroke gas piston setup first invented by Eugene Stoner a few years after he designed the AR15. That type of operating system was carried over to the g36, and the 416 uses more or less the same setup as the g36 (the actual piston is even an interchangeable part).

The HK416 (or any piston driven AR variant for that matter) functions very differently than your typical m4/m16 type rifle.

Really it isn't that different, you just put a spring in the BCG to unlock the bolt head, and you have a op rod to ram the bolt back instead of gas. Stoner intentionally did not use a piston system because of weight and part count.

Ahh. I though that HK might be a piston gun, but I see a lot of piston "AR15s", so I didn't think that was the defining factor.

That HK is a pretty good looking rifle, I like the short barrel in the picture above.
