I'm sure it's in regards to the short stroke piston. The AR15 was the space aged refined polymer/alloy spare no expense rifle. The AR18 was the cheap third world stamped steel piston variant. It utilizes a type of short stroke gas piston setup first invented by Eugene Stoner a few years after he designed the AR15.
