  • 1911 experts in here....

So I am going to use my Desert Eagle 1911 for some competition shooting in a few weeks and I needed some 10 round mags to make it easier on myself as the 8 rounds just won't cut it.

I purchased 4 of the Chip McCormick 10 rnd power mag with base pad for 1911 Government Commander....thinking all 1911's are the same....

Well, when I tested them last friday, they will chamber a round no problem, but after one shot, the slide locks back. It does this nearly every time but I swear I got off one double tap...but could be wrong. Sort of frustrated.

There is a noticeable difference at the front of the mag that operates the slide lock...but I think the difference would PREVENT the slide from locking back.

Anyone got any input before I send these back and any ideas on what I should be ordering next?!

    Thanks!

    Found this on another forum:
First, remove the upper fron the pistol, then install the magazine into the frame. Look in the slide stop cutout and see if the magazine is showing any hangover into the slidestop cutout, if it is chances are the slidestop is being pushed up by the magazine just enough to engage the stop while shooting as the magazine does move up and down slightly in the frame as you shoot. I have had several customers over the years with this problem, seems the parts tolerences nowadays are not as closely monitored as they used to be. To fix this problem all you have to do is file a small amount off of the front face of the stop (the part that fits into the cutout in the frame, not the lug that catches the folower) or trim the magazine by putting the mag in the frame and with a scribe just scribe a line on the mag through the slide stop cutout (usually its only about 1/32 or less).

From what I have read the Desert Eagle 1911s should run fine with aftermarket mags so I would probably mod the magazine before messing with the gun itself.

So it does this with each of the four magazines? Can you try the magazines with a different 1911?

File the slide release as stated above. I've never used those particular mags but I have used the 10rnd wilson combat mags and they've run flawlessly.

I tried it with 2 of the 4 and ASSumed the other two would have the same result. I might run up to the range and try one of the rental guns with my mags if they will let me.

From the read above, it seems like these mags are already clearanced A LOT in the area mentioned. Hence why I am amazed that the slide stays back at all...

I may order one of the wilson combat mags and see what the difference is.

I ordered these from MidwayUSA and it sounds like I can return them and only be out the shipping both ways. Maybe I can exchange them for the Wilson's.....

I prefer the Wilson magazines myself and I've tried a few different brands including Chip McCormick. The Wilson magazines are just so buttery smooth. Wish you were closer and I'd let you try it on some of the 1911's I own.

did some more research online today and over in 1911forums there were a couple guys that said the chip mccormicks work great? They didn't specify which ones as there are 8 rnd, 10rnd and Power mag and something else.....

they did say the Wilsons work great....but the ones I want I keep finding on back order.

I really need 10 rnd mags for the competition stuff but may just say fugg it and keep shooting with my 220 till I find what I am looking for.
