  • Is your gun... safe?

VideoThe author and his team used a variety of simple implements to open these safes, including paperclips, strips of thin brass, drinking straws and wires. All of these safes shown can be easily and quickly opened. Americans love their guns, and every day someone in the U.S. is either shopping for [...]

Never had much faith in Stack-Ons to begin with.

Currently, the kids know to leave daddy's Gun Vault alone (it's not the one shown in this article). It all begins with education with the kids and getting them to have a deep respect for firearms.

This has me just slightly concerned since I have a kid now. I was planning to get a biometric type safe. Fortunately there is a good amount of time left before it would be a real issue..

Education and teaching a large dose of respect can go a longer way than a strong safe when kids are in the mix. I was raised around all kinds of firearms (I remember watching my grand dad fire his fully auto Uzi(I was a kid, don't know what it actually was) into the ground so us kids could then try to dig and find the rounds) and was taught a VERY healthy respect for them. My step dad took me into a field when I was 5 years old and let me fire his 12 gauge shotgun. A bloody nose later and I quickly learned it wasn't something to play with. If I did ever play with them then I knew my ass was gonna be blistered. Too bad you can't do that today without getting a phone call from CPS.
Annoying people, one post at a time!

That video of the 3 year old getting into the safe is about the dumbest damn "look how easy it is" video Iv seen. The dad taught the kid how to open it and showed the kid the sequence for the last one. Toddlers are capable of learning how to do a lot of things if you teach them. Mine can unlock an iphone then get on youtube and look up vids of cars/trains/diego.
Most safes are pieces of crap and easy to open once you've been shown how.

But what's with the safes just opening after being jarred a few times? I'd get my money back on that POS.

Its called bouncing, most safes have a spring mechanism in it and this bypasses it. Here's an article from last year about it.

If you have a digital safe with a passcode entry, a few things could go wrong. You could forget the code, the electronic mechanism could fail, or some

If I can pick it up, I'm not storing valuables in it period.

The article says models with a counterweight mechanism will not open during bouncing, if you read it.

On the same token, does anyone have recommendations on small safes that hold a single firearm that are good?

I like the GunVault brand so far. Some have poor reviews, but I got the something-something deluxe for a hangun and it's smooth/functions well and way better feel/construction compared to "cheap" safes that are NOT that much cheaper.

Nice foam in it, a light...etc.
