I bought a new 870 express 12ga from academy about a month ago. Well, now I realize that it never gets shot and seeing that I'm going off to college, it really isn't needed anymore. Tbh I'd rather just pick up a subcompact pistol so I can actually shoot it. Since I filled out all the paperwork and the gun is in my name, what do I need to do/who to notify that I am selling the gun?

If it makes you feel better, you can write up a bill of sale and have the buyer sign it and list his DL #.
Just make sure you only sell it to someone who lives in TX or bordering state unless you want to have to go through an FFL to do the transfer..."Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." - Thomas Jefferson, 1776
