  • 6.8 vs 6.5

I'm a newb at anything with building a rifle but have the itch to see if I can do it. I have researched it and trying to decide if the 6.5 Grendel or the 6.8SPC is more what I'm looking for. What are y'alls impressions of both rounds and which is better for distance shooting?
Why put off till tomorrow what you can put off till the next day?

    Whats your idea of distance?
What length rifle do you want?

Generally the 6.5 is better suited for longer ranges.

The main advantage to the 6.8 is that it was built from the ground up to perform in a short barrel.

I'm looking for probably an 18 inch barrel. For hunting I won;t take a shot over 200yds. Too many variables that can throw my shot off and I don't want to leave a wounded animal running around. For target shooting I would like to go up to 800-900 yards.

If you want to target shoot that far 6.5 is the ticket, might want to go with a 20" barrel for best performance though.

The longer the barrel the more twist you can pull out of it. I went with a 24" 1:8 twist for my .223 rifle and it's stable over 1000 yards. The more twist you can pull out, the less energy you sacrifice to friction. Not only does the barrel last longer, but the longer the barrel the heavier the projectile you can stabilize with the least twist. If that makes any sense. It gets a little complicated.

If you plan on spending the time to shoot out to 800-900 yards then .223 or 6.5. If you want to shoot out to 500 yards then 6.8.

The 6.5 Grendel is a better choice for long distance shooting. For anything under 200 yards, though, you could probably get better performance out of the 6.8. The 6.5 has better bullet selection of the two. Honestly, though, the problem with both is case capacity, or the lack thereof.

The 6.5 grendel barrels are not cheap.

If long range type accuracy is expected a quality barrel is needed anyway and those aren't cheap.

Another thing to keep in mind is that to properly and effectively shoot that far you're gonna need a scope with a fair amount of internal adjustment.

They show up every now again between $250-$300.

                            6.5 Creedmoor
You remember the stories John use to tell us about the the three chinamen playing Fantan? This guy runs up to them and says, "Hey, the world's coming to an end!" and the first one says, "Well, I best go to the mission and pray," and the second one says, "Well, hell, I'm gonna go and buy me a case of Mezcal and six whores," and the third one says "Well, I'm gonna finish the game." I shall finish the game, Doc.
