I like the XD more than the Glock for sure. (I've have not shot and XD, so I can't say)

A 9mm will be cheaper to shoot (about 50% more for .45acp/.40 [$10/50 vs $15/50]). (truth)

Besides this, the best advice is to go shoot, but try everything that they have that has been recommended, or you think you may like.

I'd try and find a used p30 in 9mm if I wanted to spend that much (which I don't)

Horrible trigger that won't be easy to adapt to. You will be more accurate with a comparable Glock or XD than the P30. I can talk all of the shit i want about it, because I own one.

I'd vote for a CZ-75 or Witness over a glock. Glocks work, but that's it. The trigger is shit, I don't like how they shoot, and they have no soul.

I am a fan of Glock but also don't believe in pushing my beliefs/interests over onto others like that video implied(hilarious video btw). I love my Glock 19 and 22 but also appreciate many other guns. Like everyone said, go rent some and see what you like. I do agree with the KISS method for a first gun though so I wouldn't exactly recommend a SAO gun.

wanted to see what is your opinion of the best ~$700 semi-automatic handgun. Both of my neighbors have 45s - one a Glock and one a 1911. Just looking for your opinions. This will be my first ever gun, and it will be my only gun for awhile. I'm taking a gun safety course in 2 weeks, and I would like to make a purchase shortly after.

So, I've got about $700 to spend on the gun and another $150 for ammo, case, etc. What would you get?

You said it will be your only gun for a while so think of the future when buying it.
Do you plan on getting your CHL? If yes dont buy a 5in barrel or full size.
Is a safety important to you?
My first pistol was a G19 and I personally didnt care for it. I sold it to my dad for cheap. After alot of trial and error I currently carry an 3.8in XDM in .45 auto. If i ever am forced to use it, I know it will function properly and I trust it. I also read somewhere that you might not ever get your gun back in a self defense shooting so I refuse to carry an expensive pistol.

in all seriousness, pick a caliber then pick a frame size. there are plenty of recommendations but they are all different based on requirements. i could say full size 1911 .45 acp but i could also suggest a 4.5" xdm 9 just as easily as a S&W airweight revolver.

The same people who complain about the grip angle of a glock say an XD/XDM is unacceptable because of a high bore axis. For most shooters, Neither really matter. Pick a reliable gun of whatever brand you choose and practice. Also, just because something feels great in your hand at the store doesn't mean you will shoot it great. Ive started improving once i realized that it's not the gun....it's me who needs improvement

USP Compact is a good choice but not in his budget. Maybe he could find a used one with a single mag for that, maybe. Last time I sold one I got $850, and the mags are $50 each.

Just to add in... I will not be getting my CHL initially (maybe in a year or two after I am comfortable with a handgun). It will just be a range gun, go to the farm and shoot cans gun, keep at home just in case gun, and of course to shoot any Texas Rat Snakes...
