  • Opinions on best short range 9mm defense round?

Sooo many options out there to choose from....So damn many suppliers and shops to look at. I'm just curious if anyone on here has done any research to pick a perfect 9mm self defense round thats not terribly expensive or hard to find. I've been carrying with Winchester 147gr. PDX hollow points (standard Wal-Mart self defense rounds) for a while but just curious if anyone has any better suggestions? Given the small size and substantial recoil of the PF9 I carry I would rather not carry +P rounds so I'm sticking with standard 9mm.

can't do wrong with 147gr Hydra-Shok, OR some gold dots,

    edit: hornady zombie max also,

The PDX is a pretty good bullet as is. I always recommend carrying whatever you can get a decent amount of so you can practice periodically with to learn POI and make sure they function well.

The above choices are good. Here is some strange advice. Load the first round hardball. Most accidents involve that round, and it is less lethal in the accident, but still. Dry effective in stopping. If you really need lethality, empty the magazine.

I always carried in this manner, and will again when I go back and gety CHL. Mine expired in '98.

My recommendation is the Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel Barrel 9mm in 124 gr. I've seen a demo of this ammo for .38 Special in a snubbie and it expanded very well. I'll post a link to the video later.

Jose, I know you saw my FB post about my ammo change.

OP: I was a HARDCORE Hydroshok guy for a long time. All I carried in my 40cal and my .380... I've changed to the Hornaday FTX round. Your standard hollow point can become hindered when passing through heavy clothing: your typical Oakland Raiders jacket, Cadillac wool sweater, Sean John designer leather coats, even heavily starched denim jeans can cause the hollow point to plug with cloth that will keep it from expanding. It effectively becomes a FMJ and doesn't expand. I went ahead and made the swap.

Not to hijack but has anyone used the Remington Golden saber ammo?

I'm a big fan of Federal HST and carry it in all my self defense handguns...

It's a solid low cost option.

I use 124 Grn +p gold Dots but wouldn't feel like I was going to be outgunned if I carried Golden Saber instead.

I've been shooting Winchester SXZ through my Kahr 9mm. They make a "clone" training round that feeds, handles and kicks just like the actual defense round but is much cheaper. Apparently Bass Pro is the only place to get it, but my gun likes feeding it so I'll stick with it.

Right now I do have Hornady FTX in my .40 though, free bullets with dies

I carry 147 grain 9mm Golden Sabers in my Sig P239 (and Beretta 92A1 at home) and 102 grain .380 Golden Sabers in my Sig P238.

I also use 147 grain 9mm Federal HST (hard to find though) and Hornady Critical Defense in 147gr 9mm and 90gr .380.

Hornady was running the rebate program where if you buy a set of dies or any other reloading equipment (over a certain price) you could get to pick a box of bullets from a list to get for free. Figured I'd give these a try, pretty nice!
