At that distance you will also need a scope that cost as much or more than the rifle. 300 yards is pretty easy with most bolt guns, 500 is a lot harder than you think, 1,000 yards is exponentially harder than 500.
For the price at 500 yards a Savage or Remington .308 is hard to beat.

That being said my Kimber has been a spectacular rifle and it is my go-to gun for hunting. It is light as hell and I got it for free in a raffleOriginally posted by lincolnboyAfter watching Games of Thrones, makes me glad i was not born in those years.

Here's a good read on the subject.
Most complete 7mm precision shooting page. Info for 7mm cartridge gun shooters. Brass bullet primer powder 7mm data for .284 winchester, 284 win, 7mm S.A. Ultra Mag, 7 SAUM and 7 WSM. 7mm rifles from Remington and Browning. BOSS tuner, Winchester, Remington, Norma and Lapua brass. Hunting bullets from Barnes, Berger, Hornady, Sierra, Nosler. VLD partition TSX MatchKing GameKing. Load maps Ballistic drop charts.
Keep in mind I'm not knocking the 6.5's or the 6mm's but they are significant over bores which hurts barrel longevity a bit. That's not a big deal to some but for me personally it is when considering the 243 or 6.5-284 good accuracy life is around 1500-2000 and barrels run around $300 and up plus another 300 or so for the install."It's another burrito, it's a cold Lone Star in my hand!"
