  • Gun carrying man ends stabbing spree

    Got this from TxRedneck

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A citizen with a gun stopped a knife wielding man as he began stabbing people Thursday evening at the downtown Salt Lake City Smith's store.

Police say the suspect purchased a knife inside the store and then turned it into a weapon. Smith's employee Dorothy Espinoza says, "He pulled it out and stood outside the Smiths in the foyer. And just started stabbing people and yelling you killed my people. You killed my people."

Espinoza says, the knife wielding man seriously injured two people. "There is blood all over. One got stabbed in the stomach and got stabbed in the head and held his hands and got stabbed all over the arms."

Then, before the suspect could find another victim - a citizen with a gun stopped the madness. "A guy pulled gun on him and told him to drop his weapon or he would shoot him. So, he dropped his weapon and the people from Smith's grabbed him."

By the time officers arrived the suspect had been subdued by employees and shoppers. Police had high praise for gun carrying man who ended the hysteria. Lt. Brian Purvis said, "This was a volatile situation that could have gotten worse. We can only assume from what we saw it could have gotten worse. He was definitely in the right place at the right time."

Dozens of other shoppers, who too could have become victims, are also thankful for the gun carrying man. And many, like Danylle Julian, are still in shock from the experience. "Scary actually. Really scary. Five minutes before I walk out to my car. It could have been me."

Police say right now they have no idea what caused the suspect to go on the dangerous rampage. (We will update as soon as we learn new information.)

So far, police have not released the names of the suspect, the victims or the man who pulled the gun.

Good for the guy carrying the gun. If it was me I would of shot first and asked questions later right or wrong. I mean you already have a man using deadly force on several innocent people. So a double tap isn't out of the question. Don't get me wrong I would of yelled drop your weapon also. It just would of been after the second shot went off.

Here in TX he would have been fully justified to shoot him since he was already attacking people. Save the courts some money.

thats what i was thinking, it just goes against my grain to ask someone to drop a knife while they are stabbing people.

but hey, WTH probably saved the guy a lot of money in civil court with the BG's family.
Especially if the guy was a minority and their minions showed up to protest your use of excessive force on a guy just "trying to get his stab on"

there would be talk about how rediculous it is you brought a gun to a knife fight
                    and
how he didn't get his obama check, so he really was just 'insane' at the time.
                    and
how the 'victim' had just bought girl scout cookies the day before out of the goodness of his heart

Guy was smart for not shooting. Shooting someone will cost you a minimum of $15,000 if you dont go to court. Then they are going to sue you in civil court which will be another $10,000.

So yeah, dont shoot people unless you really have to, or you have some cash you dont need I guess.

If it's a justified shooting with a result of the shooter being NoBilled, then there will be no civil court in Texas. IIRC, there was a protection from civil penalties passed 2-4 years ago, protecting people in justified self defense shootings from getting sued for "mental anguish" of the family of the deceased.

Don't go asking me to quote statutes, because I don't know them. I just remember having this conversation with my CHL instructor not too long ago.

While the penal code has that written in, the constitution states that no one shall be free from suit for any reason. So basically you can get sued for anything no matter what. Even if the case doesnt hold up well in court, you are still going to have to fight it.

So far I have not seen a shoot case that has not had a civil suit afterwards. While most of the people end up No-Billed, they all get sued.
