  • First shotgun recommendations?

I am looking at getting my first shotgun, does anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking of a Remington 870.
I am pretty much buying for home defense and shooting clays.

Just be smart about what you buy if you want to use it for both. A 28" barrel doesn't go around corners too easily. If you're buying a pump action its easy to just change the barrel and the choke out for its use. For clays you'll want a longer barrel than for HD duty. I guess similar to having 2 uppers for an AR. More expense but definitely cheaper than 2 complete weapons.

Nothing wrong with an 870 to get you into shotguns. I picked up an older used 870 Wingmaster and I love it. The newer ones can be hit or miss (no pun intended) on QC so just look them over.

I've never had a problem with my Winchester 1200 and 1300 Defenders but I do not believe they make it anymore. An 870 is a fine choice though and I would recommend it. I just happened to get the Defender's cheaper than an 870.

My 870 3 inch magnum worked great for me the entire time I had it. I went through thousand of rounds and I hardly even cleaned it. Worked everytime I pulled the trigger, hell I even went dove hunting with it several times, lmao!

Mossberg is releasing a modular pump shotgun (500 or 590 series) which will allow easy barrel swaps and tool-less butt stock removal.

            870.

For home defense id buy a shorter barrel. Or just buy two 870's they are cheap

That's what I bought and I love it! It's not the most efficient shotgun for clays but you can shoot wildly at them and eventually hit something!

Mossberg Maverick 88 for the house. $170 @ Academy and a good throw away gun.

Remington 1100 or Browning Silver for clay.

Or if you're a ballar, Holland & Holland, Sauer Meisterwerk, Perazzi or Francotte.
You remember the stories John use to tell us about the the three chinamen playing Fantan? This guy runs up to them and says, "Hey, the world's coming to an end!" and the first one says, "Well, I best go to the mission and pray," and the second one says, "Well, hell, I'm gonna go and buy me a case of Mezcal and six whores," and the third one says "Well, I'm gonna finish the game." I shall finish the game, Doc.

870, 1100 and 11-87 are easy to get barrels for so buy either a long or short barrel then get the other later on.

I've got an 870. The only concern with it is the safety if you're left handed. If you are, then one of the other brands might be better since it might be a thumb safety.

I like that I've got a youth sized 20g 870 and a full size 12g 870 and they work the same so my kids and wife will know how to operate both easily.

I like my Saiga but do your research before you buy. I am into mine for around 1100 or so and I still need a couple of more things to get it just the way I want it. Look at the 930 SPX also, ,my guys have put some rounds thru them and really like them. Dont get me wrong, out of the box my Saiga was fine but you wont stop at just buying it.
