  • "That was awesome Dad!"

I took the family out to my Dad's place because I wanted to shoot my 91/30 and my XD 40. I asked my son if he wanted to shoot the XD. He was a little timid at first, he's about the most cautious by the rules kid you'd ever meet. So I ran through a few rounds to let him see what it was like for me to shoot it. After I unloaded it I had him come up and I showed him how to hold it, what the grip safety was, go over again lining up the sights, and of course where you place your finger when you are not firing. I told him to squeeze off one round and then he didn't have to fire anymore if he didn't want to. He squeezed off a round, took his finger off the trigger, kept the muzzle pointed down range, turned his head and said "That was awesome Dad!" So I said finish off the magazine if you want to. So he proceeded to fire off the remaining 11 rounds. I was very proud of the fact he remembered the safety lessons we've been teaching him even though he was excited after firing it.

Nothing beats spending quality time with your kids, and props to you for taking them to do something most kids these days will never get a chance to do.

Cool. I can't wait until my son is old enough to do stuff like that. All he does now is shit his pants.

Way to go man. Sad thing is i had a family out fishing my pond today and the 11 year old boy whined and was a pita the entire time. The three year old girl was having a blast.

He even got to shoot some guns as well. It was girls night out in our little town and his grandmother owns a local business. All he wanted todo was goto work( aka check out the bitches).

He also cant poop in the woods, so be glad you have a real man on your hands.

I told my GF's kid that guns are simple:

            1. NEVER point it at anything, unless you intend to shoot that object.
            2. NEVER place your finger on the trigger, unless you are ready to shoot.
            3. ALWAYS be sure the area behind your target is clear.

Then I told him that if he EVER gets forgets one, his shooting days are done.
It's been a year now, and he has yet break one of these rules.

Awesome! I still remember the first time my dad took me shooting. I hope your son remembers it for the rest of his life too.

My father never took me shooting because he is a hippy. I will see how the future holds for me.

We weren't hippies but I never shot a gun until I was 25, parents were never into them

Both of my boys love to go shooting, they are 8 and 12. They love taking the .22 rifle out and plinking with me. This was his first time shooting a pistol though .

That is cool, my kids love to shoot. I can never stockpile ammo since I built both of them an AR. I need to finish out one more in .22 and make them shoot it.

that's awesome! I hope to go again with my daughter soon. I told her it was important to periodically go back to keep your mind fresh about how to handle a gun. My five year old already wants to shoot a shot gun but he's got a few years till then.
