Alot of the guys in my department that carry AR's actually commented that they would prefer a better shotgun to their AR's. I would prefer both and we have two slots. I would carry it in stock form but the charging handle is dead center in the middle of my holder.
Honestly, if my life was on the line, I'd trust an 1100 over a Saiga.

Personal I would not trust either one as I have had problems with both. If my life is on the line and I can only have a shotgun I will stick with my old Winchester model 12. If the model 12 is not an option I'd go with a Mossberg 590 or Remington 870.

The only time an 1100 should ever give you an issue is when the gas seal gets cracked after several years. They are rock solid guns. If my ass was on the line, I'd have a 18" 1187 with 3" magnum buckshot with an extended magazine.

I will be putting at least a 1000 rounds thru it in a few different forms before I do anything. I have seen AR's, SIGs, Kimber, H&K, 870's, and assorted others fail. I guess it is just what you are comfortable with that makes the most difference. In the SIG's defense it was the plastic guide rods causing 100 percent of the issues I saw. When we switched over to metal we had zero failures from them. I hate that we switched to M&P's but ehhh I had no say in it.

After I bought the Saiga I got to looking around at 1100 parts and if I dont sell it I am going to do just what you have mentioned and compare them both side by side. Unless I am being attacked by Zombies I think 10 rounds should do it. LOL I still am a bg fan of the Saiga though. I do not stock up on guns so the Saiga was just kinda a little treat for me and something different. I like having three and they all have one purpose, self defense. Have you seen the full auto ones? That would be fun also.

My 1100 had not been shot in yearssssss and I just rolled out to the farm and boom still worked like new.

With the 1100s I have had numerous types of failures mostly ammo related. FTF, FTE, broken ejector, extractor falling out of the bolt, broken action spring to name a few; and this was just screwing around with them, not fighting for my life. Never have had an 1187 but I have been considering one of the police models.

The most reliable auto loader shot gun I have ever owned has been a Super X model 1.

Anybody got to play with a new RAA Akdal MKA 1919 yet? Wondering how it compares to the Saiga. I heard in factory form they don't cycle well on light loads but folks have fixed that by adding a shim to increase preload tension on the bypass spring.

you usually open the gas port up a little more and they do better.

The 930 handles and points really well but I have yet to shoot one, the most dead reliable semi auto shotgun I've ever used is a Browning/FN A5 there are stone reliable but will put a pretty good beating on the shooter.

I bought mine a year ago when they were in the $360-$380 range at the gun shows. At the Mesquite gun show last week they were selling for $580 ish.

They don't cost that much anymore, there are several local retailers selling them for around $400. After the shot-show annoucement in 2011 people thought they were going to be banned from import. That wasn't the case.

right now Im leaning towards the cheaper of the two. If I could land a mossberg in the 550 range I'd jump on it

I figured they would be back down in price by now. I only looked at the price of one on a table.
I went there looking for a new CCW. I wasnt paying much attention to the Saigas.
