  • Took the CHL class with the wife yesterday!

She was kind of worried about the shooting portion before we went, but she shot a 247! She was soo excited she kept her target and made me keep mine too, I shot 250 . We have appointments with L1 Wednesday, and then we can mail in the paperwork that day. Hopefully we'll have our licenses soon after that.

Anyone use Texas Law Shield for representation? Have you had to use them? They had a rep come to the class and we ended up signing up with them. For $240 a year for the both of us, if something does happen it's a lot cheaper than finding and paying an attorny!

I am interested in any reviews on Texas Law Shield as well. My CHL should be here either this week or the next and I have been giving the legal defense aspect some thought. I am looking on their website right now but would appreciate anyone who knows more about them to put in their two cents.
I don't like Republicans, but I really FUCKING hate Democrats.

TLS is a bit of a scam. Someone did the math and basically since it ONLY covers you if you use your weapon (and it's more $$ for a CHL) it's really, really bad insurance as the likelihood of you using your weapon is very low.

Now here's where it gets worse. Your CHL instructor gets free TLS. They also get $30-40 per student that signs up in the class.

That used car salesman feeling you got from the guy selling it? You got that feeling for a reason.

Also... the "presentation" on what to do legally after a shooting sure was weak IMO. Just "call your lawyer -- or better yet TLS who is right here" rather than really getting into what happens.

I signed up with them. I don't even have my CHL yet, but the fact (if they truly do what the say) that if I pop a guy robbing my house and kill him, I don't have to pay a dime for both civil and criminal trial (if I am not no-billed)

        It's worth the monthly fee...

The insurance (this is where it gets funky too... not insurance, not prepaid legal [which is regulated], "retainer with no fees") is not a license to shoot someone for stealing from you. It should not influence that decision, but I feel that it would.

The question of you being sued or charged should absolutely play a part in your (hopefully before it all goes down) decision to end a human life for stealing your car stereo at night. It's one thing to talk big about it, but quite another to really do it. If you take out the legal repercussions (well at least some of the legal cost in fighting them) this will lower your inhibition to end a life for a, at the end of the day, meaningless piece of property.

Someone attacks your family? No question. Steals your TV? Your car? Your stick of bubble gum or $0.49 from the console? You personally have to draw the line somewhere.

My instructor didn't tell us the scores (likely lazy) and didn't let us keep the targets. He made an interesting point. Since the shooting portion here in Texas is so easy... if you were to shoot someone (potentially an innocent bystander), the results of your shooting qualification could be subpoenaed and the case against you could be made that you're a terrible shot (or in your case, a gun loving expert marksman that purposefully shot the innocent bystander). IANAL, and neither was he, but I can see this as a valid argument to not keep or show your shooting qual.

Our scores were never written anywhere other than on the target that gets thrown away.

HEll in oklahoma they don't even score you, how many rounds do you guys have to shoot? Everything here is graded on safety, which honestly I think accuracy is part of safety.

50 rounds. The majority from bayonettable with a moist nougat.

I was kind of wondering if a pre paid legal setup would be better than TLS. You're right he didn't really go over much for a "after shooting event" just that "you're in no state to talk to police because you might say something stupid." He did give a real world account of what happened to him for saying something to a cop and it costing him 3 years of court and over $130,000!

Ours weren't written anywhere at all. As he pulled the targets down he called out our scores. Then he went to throw them away, so my wife happened to speak up and say "Can I keep mine?" So he let us keep ours.

His biggest thing was gun safety too. His theroy was if you are stupid enough to point a gun at someone at the range, or do something very stupid, he'd send your name to the state and you wouldn't get your license.

Well did he produce docs? "Lies, damned lies, and statistics"

If I was selling something like that (or an extended warranty) this is exactly the statement I'd make.

Now... I know someone that was in a home defense shooting and he did spend a LOT of money dealing with it. But he also shot a perp in the back as the perp was surrendering (multiple perps already dead in the house, the one that was surrendering was mouthing off how he'd be out in hours and would come kill his family).

I can't tell you if TLS or Prepaid is the way to go (I shy away from real lawyer needs and PPL).
