If you search online you can find one or two sites that go for around $85 and hand selected ones for a little bit more. They're all surplus for that price the hand selected deal may keep you from getting a junk rifle. If you hit up pawn shops and gun shows you'll find one for $100 and get to check out out hands on so you don't end up with a junker. Plan Pawn shop currently has one for $99.

I own a few and they're great fun to shoot. Ammo is dirt cheap, can be easily had, and packs a nice wallop. The same ammo is used by the PSL and the Dragunov. Some of the most famous snipers ever used Mosin Nagants, Simo Häyhä 505 confirmed kills, Vasily Zaytsev who the movie Enemy At The Gates was about used a Mosin to rack up 242 confirmed kills.

One downside to these rifles is there aren't many aftermarket parts for them, they pretty much are what they are. You can find after market stocks for them and there are a few companies that make scope rails for them, though the scope attachments seem to usually have mixed reviews in how well they work. If you attach a scope you will also have to get a down turned bolt. Those can be had on ebay or ATI makes one, though I don't care for their design.

Also, if you get one make sure you scrub them good, they come sopping with cosmoline. For the price, I think think they're one of the best deals you can get. No it's no AR, but for $100 it'll knock the crap out of a hog.

    Tons of info here:

I've read a lot about them being covered in cosmoline and the stocks being pretty well thrashed, that is also what the ones for sale at Gander mountain looked like. Also I read to look out for counter boring and poor rebuilds as well as dirt, rust, etc.

Now, all that said, the 1938 91/30 I ordered from CTD, was in remarkable condition. It had been refurbished. The stock is near perfect for 74 years old. The gun was clean, bore and all. There was no cosmoline, only some well placed oiling. The FFL that transferred it said they had never seen one that nice. Just luck, I guess? Either way, I was happy.

I just bought a Mosin from buds and had it shipped to Jeff and picked it up with my lowers. The cosmoline takes forever to remove. Total PITA. I dont have a pic after i cleaned it and i have not shot it yet but the bolt is smooth and it looks decent enough.

Yeah, I saw those. One guy had one for $85, but they were all rough as it gets.

                        I have 4 of them.

I have an M44 with mismatched everything that shoots great, and will shoot ANYTHING I feed it. Never jams and is not picky at all. I paid 70$ for it from an individual. It's a 53 Hungarian.

My 2nd one is my first 91/30, it's a 42 Ishkhev, with a light color. The bore looked real bad but for 70$ all #'s matching with a bayonet, I thought "Why not". It cleanded up real well, and it shoot's decent. The main thing with me is that it's a wartime model, it fascinates me so I got it. This one will also shoot anything I feed it.

The 3rd one that I bought is a 42 Tula. Looks super nice. Gander Mtn. for about 120$. It also shoots just about anything. This one also came with a bayo, but also came with all the accessories, etc, though I'm not sure if they match.

The last one I have is the 1927 Tula Ex Dragoon, with a Hex reciever. Looks brand fuckin new! My wife bought this one as a V-day present for me. Numbers matching everything, bayo, all accessories, had to clean the cosmo from this one. It is by far the best shooting Mosin out of all of them. It's also very picky. It does not like the lacquer coated stuff. But feed it the right ammo, and it's the best of the bunch.

The pic is out of order though. Top is 42 Tula, next is the 27 Ex Dragoon, 3rd is the 2nd one I bought, the 42 Izzy, and last bought not least, "Mr Sparky", the 53 Hungarian M44.

That one and the cheap mismatched M44 are my fav's.

Mitchell's Mousers will sell you a nice pretty clean one with the awesomesauce 2x soviet scope, a milspec issue ammo belt, a display stand, infantry issue cleaning kit and a DVD copy of enemy at the gates for $800.

Come to think of it, not having to scrape cosmo off your hands all day might be worth 7 bills....

I'll sell mine for $120 with a few boxes of ammo (soft point even so you can shoot it at the ranges here) round receiver, 1937 (IIRC). Pretty smooth action.
