I have a Jennings 9mm that is all metal, pretty ugly in its own right, and doesn't work.

OK, I admit, I know absolutely nothing about guns. I didn't grow up with them and no one really took the time to teach me about them. I feel like I am vulnerable at home since I don't have a way to protect my family, so this has been weighing on my mind. All I know is to point and shoot. Types of bullets, guns, ammo,

My thread on my one gun.....it is a piece of shit.

My Ex-gf had a lorcin - I thought it was fake when I first saw it.

That thing was one step above a dimestore cowboy cap gun.

I had a Hi Point years ago, never had a single issue with it and I abused the fuck out of that gun. Probably a thousand rounds through it, never cleaned it once, dropped it out of a tree stand twice, left it in the tree stand for a week at a time several times in the winter cold/rain/dust, etc etc. It was ugly as fuck, but still went bang when you pulled the trigger and would hit a paper plate most of the time at 25 yards, it was worth the $79 I paid for it.

generally (not always) someone who buys a hi point buys the cheapest ammo possible. (for obvious reasons) i have a buddy who has one of those ugly things and he runs federal champion and hornaday threw it and has very little problems.
for what it is... and the price... they are great for someone who doesnt have an alternative (single mom etc)

That may have been why I had such luck with it, I always use quality ammo (if I can) in my firearms. I learned as a kid with my .22 rifle that it sucks buying a shit-ton of ammo for a semi-auto to only have issues with them. Maybe that is why I like bolt actions and single shots so much now, they are far less ammo sensitive.

A co-worker had a firestar 9mm. It stopped firing after the 3rd magazine. It was about 11 years ago, but I remember a part coming out and no more bang.
More expensive doesn't make things better either. I had a Diamondback .380 (9mm short since this is a 9mm discussion). Something in the trigger mechanism broke at my first range outing. Couple that with failure to feed or eject literally every 2-3 rounds. I'd take a cheaper pistol that actually cycled.

If you think that a highpoint is crap you should try to make one "Ka-Boom". It can't be done.
