That is an issue. The steel cases can stick in the chambers, though. It's pretty rare, but it happens.

The laquer doesn't get hot enough to melt off into the chamber. What you get is increased carbon fouling in the chamber because the steel cases don't expand and seal as well as brass cases during the firing process.

        Update.

New gas block on. The gas port is at 12:00, but the two dimples on the bottom are offset slightly (about 1mm), so I had to be really careful installing the gas port. Blue locktite.

I cleaned everything well and got the BCG pretty wet with oil.

Out to the range today with a mix of ammo. I had a couple correct eject and then load right at the beginning but for the most part now it's ejecting, but not stripping a new round off the mag. Of course it's not locking the bolt open on the last round, so it's short stroking. Also getting the tale tell short stroke double feed. This is with BVC reload 55g and brown bear 62g. I didn't try the Tula again since it was not quite working yet anyway.

I wonder if it's the gas rings? When I pull the firing pin and bolt pin, if I hold the bcg by the extractor, it falls a bit (if I jiggle, it falls all the way out easily). Isn't that the normal test?

At least the rifle is pretty accurate (more accurate than me!).

Your gun does not like JUNK ammo. Try good ammo.

The bolt can be a little loose but should not fall out.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

Try good ammo. Tula/hergs sometimes sends out underpowered rounds.

It should run on almost any ammo, barring extreme quality issues. Gas rings, clogged gas key, etc. something is probably up.

As stated before a good rifle should have no problem running steel cased ammo. I wouldn't consider it fixed unless it did.

Check the gas key again make sure that thing is on there good and tight and staked.

If you are getting good gas then I'd try lightening the recoil spring a bit.

Downs that was my next step. There's some slop in the gas tube around the pin (as if someone just beat the pin in) so now the tube wobbles a bit. I ordered a new tube and a second recoil spring. I'll try the tube first and if that doesn't help then I'll try cutting pieces of the second spring off (if it doesn't work alone).

I'm also going to recheck the gas key. I ordered rings as well (hell, they're cheap) so I can try that.

I think there might be a lube issue since it worked for a couple rounds and then stopped (but that could be wet rings vs. dry rings once it fired a couple times).

I want this AR to work with anything I can put into it.

                      Ok. Got the parts in.

The rings were likely a problem. Significantly more effort (but not a lot really) to put the bolt into the carrier.

Before I bother with the gas block or recoil spring I'm going to check it so I can see what solves it.
