686 night sights install

    686 night sights install

    I just got some meprolight night sights for my 686 and can't put them on with my tool setup. Would anyone with some good gun tools and punches put this on for me for a fee?
    I tried a few gunsmiths but they are backed up 2-3 months at this point..

    You basically have to break the rear sight screw and render the stock sights useless before you even start.

      You bump them too hard the case around the tritium can break, in which case they won't glow anymore.

        I cannot imagine how hard of a hit it would take to do that. Those vials should be very well epoxied in there.

          You need to find another gunsmith. Like a hole in the wall place. If they are backed up you are already going to be spending too much.

                I thought the same until I saw a busted set of Trijicon's at the gunsmiths, a guy had brought in a slide off a 1911 cause he tried a brass punch and busted them. The gunsmith said he had seen some meprolights that did the same but the customer opted to keep them.

                  I can only imagine he was smashing the shit out of them. I've never had a problem with any I've done. I also use a towel between my punch to prevent it from marring the finish.

                    I would think that and a good lube in the dovetail would be sufficient, I went ahead and let the guy install mine since he didn't charge me.

                        Just a side question here as far as sight alignment, is it just trial and error? After installing the new sights you just try to get them as centered as possible and than go to the range?

                        Oh and is a 686 a Smith & Wesson revolver?

                          Yes it's a revolver. I'm pretty sure you just get them on as straight as possible then fine tune at the range.

                            Use a laser bore sight to align your iron sights right the first time.
